Network Pilot Season Has Begun

The Big 5 deciding what they expect us to watch this fall. By Brandon Wolfe Pilot season has commenced as the networks have begun their first round of pickups. NBC has ordered the dramas The Player , Chicago Med , Blindspot and Heartbreaker to series. Also in contention are Warrior , Game of Silence , The Curse of the Fuentes Women and Love Is a Four Letter Word . The network is really pinning its rebirth hopes on drama rather than comedy, the genre upon which it built an empire in the ‘80s and ‘90s. The crop given the go-ahead today will join fellow dramas Shades of Blue , Emerald City and pointless reboot/event series Heroes: Reborn in the fall. On the comedy front, NBC has a number of prospects, including Superstore , Strange Calls , People Are Talking , a pointless small-screen reboot of Problem Child , How We Live and Cuckoo . Already ordered are Telenovela starring Eva Longoria and, yet one more pointless reboot, Coach . Fox will be adding its television adapt

Survey: Consumers Now Prefer Streaming vs Live TV

What do the survey's results mean for the future of television? Story by Matt Cummings Ours is a world driven by technology. From smart devices to web apps, technology has affected the way we live every minute of our lives. And according to a new survey, it's affecting the way people consume entertainment. According to The Deloitte Digital Democracy Survey , US consumers are now more willing to watch streaming entertainment than tune in to it via live TV. The ninth annual results were published by the consulting firm Deloitte, who sampled 2,076 US consumers from Nov. 3-19, 2014. Here is just some of the landmark data: Services such as Netflix, who now have subscribers in approximately 42% of American households, have overtaken live television as the most preferred way to watch programming. The group heads out to the farmer’s market per Lizzie’s instructions and Prudence seems ob

David Ducovny Thinks Broadcast TV Needs Shorter Seasons

Here's why his recent comments are absolutely necessary in order for network television's survival. Story by Matt Cummings Network television - specifically CBS, NBC, ABC, Fox, and The CW - are in a sort of renaissance. Fueled by some of the best programming we've seen since the "Must See" era of 1994-1995, shows are grittier and more realistic than ever before. Yet, some would claim the opposite, that the current formula for television is outdated and could lead to its death unless big changes are made. With pay television opting for shorter seasons (that is, between 10-13 episodes) with shows like the Amazon Original Bosch, broadcast television has been slow to catch up. Recent trends - such as the short run for Marvel's Agent Carter - suggest that someone is listening. But, has there been enough to change the entire industry? That subject has been on our minds lately, as we've discussed it several times on our podcast Inside the Buck

Prudence decides to help Lizzy get over Erica bec

TV Review: Parks and Recreation "One Last Ride"

TV’s warmest sitcom ends with a look toward a bright future. Review by Brandon Wolfe Like many of the great sitcoms, Parks and Recreation had an inauspicious start. Debuting as the new project from the creators of NBC’s The Office , Parks and Rec utilized that series’ mockumentary format in service of examining another collection of kooks in a workplace environment, this time state government rather than a paper company. And in those early days, it was extremely easy to dismiss the show as a needless rehash of a better series that the very same people had already made. Even its protagonist, dedicated public servant Leslie Knope (Amy Poehler), initially seemed little more than a female version of Steve Carell’s hapless boob of a middle manager, Michael Scott. Throughout its brief first season, Parks and Rec struggled to carve out its own identity, to make its estimable components amount to more than a limp repackaging of something of which we were already getting a steady diet

Rumors Abound About Constantine

Showrunner Says It's Not Over Yet By David Clark Gossip has abounded in recent months regarding the cult NBC show Constantine . Since the network announced early renewals that did not mention Constantine fans of the series have feared a premature end to the dry humored hero. In a bewildered attempt to placate fan fears Daniel Cerone took to Twitter and explained the show’s status. Over a series of tweets Cerone revealed NBC’s renewal press release in February was not fully inclusive of all the networks intentions moving forward. Cerone seemed surprised by the assumption the show was already canceled. “NBC made some early pickups but #Constantine not canceled” . According to Daniel, NBC has yet to even hear a pitch regarding the second season of Constantine. “We'll pitch them our plans for 2nd season in May. Then they decide,” said Cerone. Until the pitch is made it would seem premature to assume cancellation is inevitable despite ratings projection

TV Review: Constantine “The Saint of Last Resorts”

Read on to find out what John Constantine has gotten himself into THIS time Constantine - “The Saint of Last Resorts” Review by Brandon Wolfe All the ominous “Rising Darkness” chatter that has been strung throughout Constantine like so much tinsel is finally starting to amount to something more than simply a lot of talk. From the pilot onward, the show has incessantly mentioned this mysterious, impending event without ever seeming to get at anything with any specificity, making it feel more like a buzzword than something concrete. “The Saint of Last Resorts,” the first chapter in the show’s two-part midseason finale, finally starts to fill in some of the blanks on what the Rising Darkness is, and in turn, bolsters the mythology of Constantine . This is the first episode of the series that aims to break free of the procedural mode in which the show has operated thus far. The episode is also significant in its attempt to put both sidekicks in the game for once. In each epis
