Network Pilot Season Has Begun

The Big 5 deciding what they expect us to watch this fall. By Brandon Wolfe Pilot season has commenced as the networks have begun their first round of pickups. NBC has ordered the dramas The Player , Chicago Med , Blindspot and Heartbreaker to series. Also in contention are Warrior , Game of Silence , The Curse of the Fuentes Women and Love Is a Four Letter Word . The network is really pinning its rebirth hopes on drama rather than comedy, the genre upon which it built an empire in the ‘80s and ‘90s. The crop given the go-ahead today will join fellow dramas Shades of Blue , Emerald City and pointless reboot/event series Heroes: Reborn in the fall. On the comedy front, NBC has a number of prospects, including Superstore , Strange Calls , People Are Talking , a pointless small-screen reboot of Problem Child , How We Live and Cuckoo . Already ordered are Telenovela starring Eva Longoria and, yet one more pointless reboot, Coach . Fox will be adding its television adapt

David Ducovny Thinks Broadcast TV Needs Shorter Seasons

Here's why his recent comments are absolutely necessary in order for network television's survival. Story by Matt Cummings Network television - specifically CBS, NBC, ABC, Fox, and The CW - are in a sort of renaissance. Fueled by some of the best programming we've seen since the "Must See" era of 1994-1995, shows are grittier and more realistic than ever before. Yet, some would claim the opposite, that the current formula for television is outdated and could lead to its death unless big changes are made. With pay television opting for shorter seasons (that is, between 10-13 episodes) with shows like the Amazon Original Bosch, broadcast television has been slow to catch up. Recent trends - such as the short run for Marvel's Agent Carter - suggest that someone is listening. But, has there been enough to change the entire industry? That subject has been on our minds lately, as we've discussed it several times on our podcast Inside the Buck

Flash/Arrow Spinoff News: Hawkgirl to Join Hero Team-Up

We learn today who one of the three "mystery" heroes will be. Story by Matt Cummings Those new to the superhero-on-television trend might have forgotten the one that started it all: CW's Smallville , a mix of teenage melodrama in its first 8 seasons, and a fairly good superhero tale in its last two. During those final seasons, we were introduced to the mother of all superhero team-ups, The Justice Society of America, which featured Doctor Fate, elder versions of The Flash and The Green Lantern, and Michael Shanks as the nearly-immortal Hawkman. Hidden within the epic "Absolute Justice" was Hawkman's origin story, featuring the story of his dead love, Hawkgirl. Fast forward one disappointing series finale and two very successful - and frankly better - series in The Flash and Arrow , and we've arrived at a sort of full circle. For it was revealed today by Deadline that one of three "mystery heroes" has been cast in the team-up
