Variety is reporting Jon Bernthal and Vera Farmiga are set to join the cast of New Line’s “ The Many Saints of Newark ,” a prequel movie to the critically acclaimed HBO series “ The Sopranos .” New Line could not be reached for comment on the casting. Plot details are vague other than the film being set during the Newark riots in the ’60s. The exact roles of Bernthal and Farmiga have yet to be revealed. More players from the “Sopranos” lore are expected to be joining the cast. Series creator David Chase co-wrote the script with producer Lawrence Konner. Alan Taylor is directing “The Many Saints of Newark,” while Nicole Lambert and Marcus Viscidi will serve as executive producers. Chase has been hands on from the get go in the casting process hand picking Alessandro Nivola to play Dickie Moltisanti, along with Bernthal and Farmiga in their mystery roles. Warner Bros. Pictures’ “ Aquaman ” has stormed the box office, taking in more than $1 billion worldwide in just over one month since it reigned supreme in its first market, China. In a move sure to spark complaints, controversy and discussion, former Disney/Pixar boss John Lasseter has been hired to lead the animation team at production company Skydance. Lasseter, of course, forged a hugely successful career at Pixar, segueing into leading both his original company and Disney's Feature Animation arm. But he was placed on sabbatical in November of 2017 when reports emerged of inappropriate behaviour towards female employees. Disney's leaders ultimately decided to part ways with the animation director and creative guru, rightly seeing his situation as untenable. It's all the most surprising then, to see him hired by a major company, one that has made a name for itself since 2010 backing the likes of the current Star Trek films and the more recent Mission Impossible entries.
