Movie Review: #AMERICANHONEY

Rama is back with another review for us. Startling Much of Andrea Arnold’s AMERICAN HONEY reminds me of Larry Clark’s 1995 film, “ Kids ,” struggling adolescent years, but AMERICAN HONEY is much more nuanced in that on one hand you have this somewhat social commentary about how we are the richest nation in the world and yet so many of our teens live in poverty and they have to hustle and do certain demeaning things just to get by, just to survive, just to feed themselves. On the other hand, you could see AMERICAN HONEY from the perspective of the characters and the impressive way in which they organize, you can see their selling and marketing skills, despite it being a scam and rough around the edges. They’re doing what wall street does basically but on a smaller, smaller, way smaller scale. Sasha Lane plays a free spirited teenage named Star who leaves her troubled trashy home to go on a road trip with traveling laborers her age, they go from town to town, door to door, to

Movie Review: #DeepwaterHorizon

Deepwater Horizon is competent, straight-forward, and absolutely mesmerizing. Review by Matt Cummings If Director Peter Berg's survival flick Deepwater Horizon proves anything, it's that good and decent people are usually made to suffer the will of more powerful ones, irregardless of the dangers or the facts. That's at least what Berg wants you to think, and he makes a convincing case between the concerned workers (including Mark Wahlberg and Kurt Russell) and those at BP (John Malkovich) who are determined to pump at this submersible offshore drilling platform in the Gulf of Mexico. That decision and resulting explosion in 2010 which killed 11 and became the worst oil spill in US history certainly pulls on one's heartstrings as Mike Williams (Wahlberg) desperately tries to escape the burning rig while helping his boss (Russell) and other workers. Things start off quite slowly - maybe even a little too slow - as everyday-man Williams interacts with vario

Movie Review: #Masterminds

Masterminds is for comedy food the white-trash soul. Review by Matt Cummings In Director Jared Hess' Masterminds , the "Hillbilly Heist" - the largest and perhaps most improbably heist in American history - is brought to the screen, care of an exceptionally talented corps of master comedians who use their talents to mostly hilarious effect. Zach Galifianakis plays the white-trash armored truck driver David Ghantt, whose pleasant and uncomplicated life is forever changed when his coworker Kelly Campbell (Kristen Wiig) seduces him to steal from the Loomis Fargo bank, with the promise they'll be together in sunny Mexico. What the Prince Charming-do'ed Ghantt doesn't realize is that he's being manipulated by Campbell's thieving friend Steve Chambers (Owen Wilson), who intends to hang Ghantt out for the robbery and take all the money. Pursued in Mexico by Interpol, Ghantt assume different looks to maintain a low profile, but eventually meets th
