BOB MARLEY: ONE LOVE Featurette

#StarWarsSmugglersBounty Review: July 2016

July's usually-reliable Star Wars/Funko Smuggler's Bounty sub box is a JABBA'S PALACE-sized disappointment. Review by Matt Cummings With our cancellation of Geek Fuel and Loot Crate, we're now committed to the every-other-month sub box model. For the most part, we've felt like we made a good decision, with boxes from Marvel Collector Corps and DC Legion kicking large amount of superhero ass. Unfortunately, the July submission for Smuggler's Bounty (JABBA's PALACE) provides the first disappointment in the oft-month model, and cements growing evidence of malaise and even outright cheapness with this particular line. Before diving in, let's review the details: The cost for a Month to Month is $25 (plus S/H), or $150 (plus S/H) for a one-year subscription. You get one box every other month, with SB promising $50 in value and no fluff. If you choose the Smuggler membership (yearly), you are promised an additional gift on your anniversary.

Movie Review: #StarTrekBeyond

Star Trek Beyond deftly warps us to the final frontier. Review by Matt Cummings Just over one year ago, the Star Trek film franchise was in big trouble. Having endured deserved criticism for 2013's Star Trek Into Darkness , fans learned that significant changes were happening behind the camera, as Robert Orci was unceremoniously dropped from the upcoming sequel. Fans worried that the 50th Anniversary of the franchise could be marred in mediocrity (see James Bond's SPECTRE ), as word soon arrived that Paramount desired to make something "less Star Trek-y." Fortunately, Star Trek Beyond should alleviate most people's worries, as it deftly packages many classic Trek themes into an agreeable space adventure. Three-plus years into their five-year mission, the crew of the USS Enterprise boldly explores the final frontier, while their Captain James T. Kirk (Chris Pine) secretly harbors personal doubt. His approaching birthday will see him live longer th

Soundtrack Review: #TheMusicofDCComicsV2

The Music of DC Comics, V2 is an odd outpouring of superhero love. Review by Matt Cummings In the 100+ year history of film, the recent rise and popularity of superhero movies and television shows has represented a relatively small blip on the radar. And yet, the music behind them have in some cases been around since the advent of television. In 2010, that history was celebrated in the exceptional The Music of DC Comics: 75th Anniversary Collection . A greatest hits collection, the disc mined themes from both animated and live-action television, as well as film. And while publisher WaterTower Music is hoping for the same success with this month's release of Volume 2, it's more confusing and not-that-impressive than a must-buy collection. Composers from across the genre are represented here, from John Williams and Hans Zimmer to Arthur Kobb and Blake Neely. Among my favorites are the unearthing of The Justice League of America by Hoyt Curtain - a take-off to

#GeekFuel Review: July 2016

Our final Geek Fuel box offers more of the same: a perplexing array of geeky sundries. Review by Matt Cummings NOTE: This review has been updated to include our cancellation of the Geek Fuel subscription box. With 2016 half way completed, Geek Fuel is not exactly weathering the subscription box storm. With our interest in monthly boxes finally at an end, it's time to bid GF a fond farewell. July's box makes a strong case for cancellation, featuring yet another hodge-podge of seemingly random items. Before diving in to the misery, let's review the details: The cost for a Month to Month is $17.90, $16.90/month for a 3-month subscription, $15.90/month for a 6-month tour and just $13.90/month for a one-year subscription. Shipping $6.00 to the US, Canada, and at least a few other countries. We use QUALITY and TIMING to base our reviews, so let's see how this box stands up. As always, we'll end our review with some additional thoughts after t
