Movie Review: 'Sicario'

After a very slow start, Sicario becomes one of the best movies of the year. Review by Matt Cummings August and early September were some of the worst I've ever seen at the box office. But luckily, the Oscar season is approaching, with several noteworthy films having already arrived. Among them is the thriller Sicario which almost takes too long to get going. But once it finally does, it becomes a brutal, engrossing experience that is instantly worthy of Oscar praise. Set on the US-Mexican border, Sicario introduces us to the Idealistic FBI Agent Kate (Emily Blunt) who discovers a grisly reminder of the Mexican cartels' power. Soon, she's whisked away to a intra-agency meeting with the flip-flop wearing Matt (Josh Brolin), who offers her a chance to find out who left her with a house full of corpses. Thrown into a hornet's nest of crime and violence on a scale she's never seen, Kate must decide whether Matt and his mysterious friend Alejandro (B

Movie Review: 'The Martian'

The science-fiction epic The Martian is also an irresistible human drama. Review by Matt Cummings With news recently that Mars most likely has water, mankind seems more ready than ever to venture there. Thus it seems fitting that Ridley Scott's The Martian should arrive to remind us of the dangers those journeys will ultimately bring. But the result is a brilliant, smart, and well-acted affair that is also one of the best films of the year. While on a mission to Mars, Mark Watney (Matt Damon) is left behind after a massive storm leaves him injured and presumed dead. His commander (Jessica Chastain), and fellow crew members (Michael Pena, Kate Mara, and Sebastian Stan) are forced to abandon the mission, while Watney wakes up injured and covered in sand. Rather than giving up, he decides to survive until the next mission arrives four years later, 'sciencing the shit' out of the remains of base camp into a partial greenhouse. Meanwhile on Earth, NASA Direct

Chris Hemsworth is reprising his role of the Norse god of thunder. Waititi’s emergence as the choice caps off a round of intense meetings that took place over the last month. Ruben Fleischer, Rob Letterman and Rawson Marshall Thurber were the other directors that were finalists for the gig. Waititi is the latest head-scratcher from Marvel for their pick to direct a big-budget extravaganza, especially one steeped in the Norse mythology and an Apocalypse myth. He wrote and directed episodes of Flight of the Conchords and is a writer on Disney’s upcoming animated feature Moana, which will star Dwayne Johnson. (Fun fact: he appeared with Ryan Reynolds in Green Lantern, the 2011 adventure movie from Marvel’s superhero movie rival, Warner Bros.) Guardians of the Galaxy director James G
