Movie Review: #Self/less

The enjoyable action/thriller tries to be more than it ultimately produces. Review by Matt Cummings Actor Ryan Reynolds is undoubtedly one of Hollywood's biggest mysteries. Known for his good looks and likable on-screen presence, Reynolds has recently made several poor vehicles that have nothing to show off his abilities. Sans the very good Safe House , it's been one misstep after another. And don't even get me started on Green Lantern . Although Self/Less is nothing close to that disaster, it vacillates between action and smart technological thriller, doing neither particularly well. When the New York billionaire Damien (Ben Kingsley) learns of his terminal cancer, he ventures to a facility that promises to extend his life in a most peculiar way: they will transfer his persona and memories into a genetically-grown body. Soon, Damien is the 40 years-younger Edward (Reynolds), who piles his way through a second youth of booze, women, and general high livin

Movie Review: #Amy

The undeniable voice and tragic end of Amy shed an uncompromising light. Review by Matt Cummings In Director Asif Kapadia's documentary Amy , we learn how fame, fortune, and deep-seeded family problems extinguished the bright light that was Singer Amy Winehouse. The Brit was far more than her #1 topper Rehab , her sultry voice turning young heads and even encouraging veterans like Tony Bennett to record with her. But beneath the paparazzi, long eye shadow, and hair extensions was a troubled woman whose problems started early and were ignored by her family until it was too late. Tracing her early life through home movies and on-the-road videos, we learn how Winehouse quickly rose from her North London borough to the heights of popularity. We're there when she takes home a handful of Grammys, but we also see the signs that will eventually undo her: an absent father, an enabling mother, and a husband with addiction problems of his own. Like a blended drink, Wi

Movie Review: #Minions

The pretty prequel loses steam after a hilarious opening, but the kids will love it. Review by Matt Cummings There's no denying the power of Illumination Entertainment's Despicable Me franchise as one of the most beloved by kids. Released in 2010, it gained a tremendous and nearly instant following, not because of Gru (voiced by Steve Carrell), but because of the Minions. Those yellow buffoons who utter incomprehensible words while doing insanely stupid things has led us to this point: their own standalone movie. As a movie, Minions is perhaps one of the most beautiful and realistic animated movies ever made, but you'll soon want to remove the batteries powering these idiots, as their shtick can't power an entire movie. Revealing that the yellow rubber dudes are actually immortal, we follow their adventures as they try desperately to serve one madman after another, beginning with a T-Rex, then a caveman, and eventually Napoleon, all of whom they accide

Movie Review: #TheGallows

The horror flick The Gallows finds multiple ways to hang itself. WARNING: Review contains spoilers. Review by Matt Cummings The Gallows is bad. I mean awful. But the worst part is that it didn't need to be. The low-low-low budget horror flick has a plot that sounds devilishly delightful, but its execution is hack, its character thoroughly unlikable, and its reveal serving as nothing more than a cheap money grab. On the 20th anniversary of an accidental hanging during a high school play, the teens Ryan (Ryan Shoos), Reese (Reese Mishler), and Cassidy (Cassidy Grifford) attempt to sabotage a revival of the production, only to learn that Ryan's crush Pfeifer (Pfeifer Ross) and her possessed mother have other plans. Although the three will eventually be hung, they fight to escape while unknowingly harboring the very thing which might have caused the original tragedy in the first place. Not since 2014's Tusk have I seen a film where I was actually rootin
