Sure, there's a Best Score section at each year's self-congratulatory Oscars; but in many ways music serves as a film's heartbeat, setting the tone that the DP, Cinematographer, or Director establish with their visuals. One of those 'heartbeats' left us tragically on Monday, as we learned of the death of Composer James Horner. The 61 year-old was killed when the single-engine plane he was piloting crashed 60 miles outside of Santa Barbara. Horner composed some of Hollywood's most popular films over the last 30 years - over 100 in all - from Braveheart to Avatar , to Troy and 2012's The Amazing Spider-man . Spider-Man 3.0 just got bitten. By Brandon Wolfe A new Spider-Man has been chosen. Tom Holland has been cast as Peter Parker in the upcoming Sony/Marvel joint production, which will be directed by Jon Watt. Holland emerged as the victor from a casting pool that also contained actors Asa Butterfield and Charlie Roe. The actor screen-tested twice, once with Robert Downey Jr and the other time with Chris Evans. Holland will appear with Evans in Captain America: Civil War , which is currently shooting. “Sony, Marvel, Kevin and I all knew that for Peter Parker, we had to find a vibrant, talented young actor capable of embodying one of the most well-known characters in the world,” said producer Amy Pascal. “With Tom, we’ve found the perfect actor to bring Spider-Man’s story into the Marvel Cinematic Universe.” Watt got the directing gig after Ted Melfi ( St. Vincent ) and Jonathan Levine ( Warm Bodies ) removed themselves from contention. At this event, director Roland Emmerich revealed the title of the film as Independence Day Resurgence . Also revealed was a synopsis of the film’s story: “Independence Day was just the beginning. Buzzfeed is reporting Hannibal is done. Currently in its third season on NBC, the critically praised, little watched Hannibal has been canceled. Though the show has never been a mass hit, NBC has renewed it twice before because Hannibal has been inexpensive to license (because of international sales and a VOD deal). It has also drawn a fanatically devoted cult audience. Nonetheless, airing as a summer offering, Season 3 has hit series lows. Thursday’s episode drew 1.8 million viewers and a .5 in the 18 to 49 demographic. Season 3 is 13 episodes, and a spokesman for NBC confirmed that the show will air in full throughout the summer. Hannibal, created by Bryan Fuller, stars Hugh Dancy as Will Graham and Mads Mikkelsen as Hannibal Lecter. Critics have complimented its aesthetics and thoughtful approach to violence throughout its run. For bygone shows like The Twilight Zone , the format made perfect sense on an episodic basis, allowing for the telling of a different mindbending tale each week, but for most viewers today, TV characters are seen as buddies to spend a few years checking in on, to watch grow and evolve. We become attached to these fictional people and enjoy spending 30-60 minutes of our week in their company. Their lives become extensions of our own. It’s one of the unique traits of television over films and books, that experience of observing characters on a weekly basis over an extended period of time. The anthology format is antithetical to this. By reshuffling the deck, that sense of intimacy and familiarity is lost.
