Fresh off the billion dollar successes of The Avengers and Iron Man 3 , one might assume this was always a sleeping giant just waiting to be awakened. Few will remember the reality, when in the late 90's Marvel was nearly bankrupt and in a fit of economic desperation, sold the distribution rights to several of its top characters. Pawning off X-Men and Fantastic Four to Fox, and Spider-man to Sony seemed like a way to keep the Marvel name out there, even if the comic book side died entirely. Since then, two camps of nerds have emerged to debate its merits: the comic book purists and the movie fans. None has received the backlash of groans and disdain more than 20th Century Fox, who created a great-looking series of X-Men movies, but failed to adhere to the nearly 50 years of established canon. If you seethed with barely contained envy when the San Diego Comic-Con was treated to Agent Carter , the brand new Marvel One-Shot, last weekend, you may be happy to learn that a clip has been put online. Set a year after the events in Captain America: The First Avenger , the short story finds Hayley Atwell’s resourceful Peggy Carter trying to throw herself into work following the disappearance of Chris Evans’s Steve Rogers. Trouble is, she’s been transferred to a new government agency where her superior (in title only), played by Bradley Whitford has decided that a woman’s work should be limited to desk jobs. Naturally, Peggy disagrees and uses a tip-off as a chance to head out on a mission. MGM is setting Ryan Coogler to direct Creed , and the studio is in early talks with Coogler’s Fruitvale Station star Michael B. Jordan to play the grandson of Apollo Creed in a continuation of the Rocky saga that Coogler is going to write with Aaron Covington. Sylvester Stallone will reprise Rocky Balboa as a retired fighter-turned-trainer. This comes in the wake of a strong summer platform opening for Fruitvale Station, the film that won both the Grand Jury Prize and the Audience Awards at Sundance, and captured Prize Of The Future at the Cannes Film Festival, where Coogler and Jordan were the toast of the Croisette. Coogler intends for this to be his directorial follow-up to Fruitvale Station so the intention is to make it happen quickly. Now, I know the knee-jerk reaction is to say it’s hard to get excited about what amounts to the seventh film in the Rocky series. This feels different to me, mostly because of how it came together.
