SEEKING A FRIEND FOR THE END OF THE WORLD Review By: MattInRC Friend is too timid, plays things too safely, and shows us why post-apocalyptic insurance policies have their drawbacks. If the world were to end in three weeks, how would you spend it? Would you go to work to keep consistency? Maybe spend time with family? SEEKING A FRIEND FOR THE END OF THE WORLD doesn't delve into that question too deeply, but instead lumbers rather weakly through a script that wants to be quirky/serious, yet never finds its rhythm and fails to convince audiences it's worth their time to bother. An asteroid named Matilda is about to hit the Earth, and insurance salesman Dodge ( Steve Carell , 40-Year Old Virgin) has just witnessed his wife leave him to indulge herself in the final days, literally getting out of the car and running off. Back in March, cult star Brad Dourif started the rumour mill grinding by suggesting that both a remake and a new sequel to his killer-doll franchise Child's Play were being mooted. Universal has now gone with the latter option, and announced that Curse Of Chucky is officially a going concern. Child's Play, you'll recall, began its life in 1988, starring Dourif as serial killer Charles Lee "Chucky" Ray, the Lakeshore Strangler whose nifty voodoo abilities meant he was able to transfer his soul into a Cabbage Patch-ish doll before he was shot down by cop Chris Sarandon. Dourif returned to voice Chucky in every subsequent instalment, of which there have been four to date. The series reinvented itself with Ronny Yu's Bride Of Chucky in 1998: a film so mental that it garnered the public approval of John Waters. Christopher Meloni is joining the cast of They Came Together , Lionsgate’s romantic comedy spoof from director David Wain. Paul Rudd and Amy Poehler star as a man and woman who dislike each other, with Rudd's company trying to close down Poehler's candle store. The movie is in casting mode as it eyes a July start, with Ed Helms, Cobie Smulders and Jason Mantzoukas among those already set. Meloni will play Rudd’s boss, the CEO of CorporateCo Corporation and Co., Inc. Wain, director of Role Models and Wanderlust, co-wrote the script with Wet Hot American Summer partner Michael Showalter. Meloni, the former star of TV’s long-running Law & Order: SVU, is appearing on HBO’s True Blood. Bryan Buckley returns to features on the Reese Witherspoon vehicle Men Are From Mars, Women Are From Venus at Lionsgate Summit. The film is based on the John Gray self-help title, a guide to relationships and marriage that is the best selling non-fiction hardcover book of all-time (excepting the Bible and Koran) with over 7 million copies in circulation. Deborah Kaplan and Harry Elfont have written the script and Gail Berman and Lloyd Braun are set to produce with Andrew Mittman co-producing and Meredith Milton overseeing for Summit. Plan is to shoot the film in January. While Buckley has stuck mostly to commercials, you’ve likely seen his work. Called “King of the Super Bowl,” he has directed over 40 spots for the annual NFL title game. In the process, he has won 37 Cannes Lions, and gotten 6 Emmy nominations. The first teaser trailer for the new sci-fi action flick The Prototype has been released—showing off a humanoid cyborg you do not want to mess with. So what happens when it goes rogue? The film, from Act of Valor creators the Bandito Brothers , follows a humanoid combat drone that gets loose, and the manhunt that ensues. Plus, there appear to be some conspiratorial undertones to boot. The effects look stellar, and the heads-up display (HUD) for the robot looks awesome.
