Hot off of Fast Five , Vin Diesel has come aboard to star and produce The Machine , an action comedy from MGM. While MGM’s reputation around town is that of a remake factory, mining its library, Machine is an original project coming from Thomas Lennon and Robert Ben Garant, the writers of Night at the Museum who also worked with Diesel on his action comedy The Pacifier. According to MGM, Diesel will play “a human-like machine created in secrecy by the Pentagon as the world's first true ultimate weapon. Twenty years after the project was buried and decommissioned for reasons unknown, The Machine is discovered by a kid who befriends him. When the government learns it has been reactivated, the Machine must protect the family harboring him. The project has no director but MGM says its eying a fall start. With THOR ruleing the box office the past two weeks it was only a matter of time before we heard news of a sqeal to the film. Cinemablend  has reported that their source said that they’ve already begun kicking around story ideas for the sequel with the hope that they’ll have it ready and in theaters in the same year as Iron Man 3, in 2013. That fits the pattern we’re seeing this summer, with both Thor and Captain America hitting theaters in the same year. Thor 2 project is still in very early stages and they don’t expect to start actually writing the script until the end of the year, internally producers are kicking around possible villains. In contention to face off against Thor are two characters named The Enchantres s and The Executioner . In Marvel Comics lore The Enchantress is a powerful Asgard sorceress named Amora. Tom Cruise has committed to star for Universal Pictures in Oblivion , the science fiction film that will be directed by Joseph Kosinski , who last helmed Tron: Legacy . Production will begin in October. Cruise had been loosely attached to the Radical Publishing graphic novel adaptation when Disney let it go and Universal committed to finance and distribute the $100 million film, which came with a William Monahan script that was being rewritten by Karl Gajdusek. Kosinski hatched the idea for the project and set it to be published by Barry Levine's graphic novel imprint as a calling card for a movie when Kosinski was busy for so long directing Tron: Legacy, which topped out at $400 million worldwide gross. Disney acquired the graphic novel in a heated auction last summer, and Universal was one of the studios that also chased it. Olivia Munn has found life after Perfect Couples' cancellation: the actress has joined the cast of Aaron Sorkin's cable news drama at HBO. The project, tentatively titled More as the Story Develops , revolves around Will ( Jeff Daniels ), the co-anchor of a cable news show who must contend with a new team after his fellow host lands a new gig and takes most of his staff with him. Munn will play Sloan, one of the "new breed" of sexy financial analysts with a show on Will's network. Daniels’ role was originally written as a fortysomething and marks his first regular series TV gig. I had the chance to  interview  Munn a few years ago and I gotta say she is one of the sexiest and friendliest person I have met.
