DreamWorks Martin Luther King Film Moving Forward

While other Martin Luther King projects seem to be on the ropes, DreamWorks’ untitled MLK biopic is starting to come together. Kario Salem, best known for writing the 2001 Robert De Niro-Edward Norton drama The Score , is in negotiations to pen the project, which also sees Warner Bros. coming on board to co-finance and to distribute with Disney’s Touchstone label. (Disney is where DreamWorks is housed.) DreamWorks acquired the life rights of the civil rights leader in May 2009, with Sam Nappi, Suzanne de Passe and Madison Jones on board as producers. Not only did it secure the cooperation of the King estate, the studio also has access to King's intellectual property, including his famous "I Have a Dream" speech. Warners, meanwhile, had been working on its biopic for several years and had a Salem script in deep development. Salem is said to have done three-and-a-half years worth of research and interviews when writing his screenplay. But while the DreamWorks and Wa

Zorro Reborn To Be Set In The Future

It’s been six years since the iconic swashbuckler Zorro was last seen on the screen, courtesy of Antonio Banderas and James Bond director Martin Campbell, in the period action piece " The Legend of Zorro ." But the character could be on his way back, sans swashbuckling -- and, in fact, sans the past entirely. A reboot titled " Zorro Reborn " is being developed at Fox that will remove the character from his historical California or Mexico setting. Unlike many of the previous Zorros (real name: Don Diego de la Vega) brandishing whips and swords, the hero of the new installment will live in the future -- specifically a desolate and post-apocalyptic one, according to a person familiar with the film who asked not to be identified. A Fox spokeswoman declined to comment. In this version, Zorro will be less a caped crusader for justice than a one-man vigilante force bent on revenge, in a western story that has echoes of both Sergio Leone and "No Country for Ol

The Internet is abuzz over this week's 900th issue of Action Comics , in which Superman says, "I am renouncing my US citizenship." After officials criticize him for joining a million protesters in a peaceful anti-Ahmadinejad vigil in Iran, he reflects, "I'm tired of having my actions construed as instruments of US policy. 'Truth, Justice and the American Way' -- it's not enough anymore. The world's too small. Too connected." Say What? "This is absolutely sickening," commented one reader on Foxnews.com. "We are now down to destroying all American Icons. How are we going to survive as a Nation?" Swamp Fox Press blogged, "Bleep Superman. I urge a boycott of Warner Brothers, all DC franchises, and particularly Superman." The neoconservative Weekly Standard called Superman's citizenship renunciation "about the dumbest thing DC Comics could do." Not necessarily. It's part of a thoughtful plan
