Peter Jackson To Shoot THE HOBBIT In 48 Frames Per Seconds

Time for an update. Actually, we've been intending to kick off with a video, which is almost done, so look out for that in the next day or two. In the meantime, I thought I'd address the news that has been reported about us shooting THE HOBBIT at 48 frames per second , and explain to you what my thoughts are about this. We are indeed shooting at the higher frame rate. The key thing to understand is that this process requires both shooting and projecting at 48 fps, rather than the usual 24 fps (films have been shot at 24 frames per second since the late 1920's). So the result looks like normal speed, but the image has hugely enhanced clarity and smoothness. Looking at 24 frames every second may seem ok--and we've all seen thousands of films like this over the last 90 years--but there is often quite a lot of blur in each frame, during fast movements, and if the camera is moving around quickly, the image can judder or "strobe." Shooting and projecting at 48

Matt Reeves To Direct Film Based On 8 O’Clock in the Morning

Matt Reeves has signed on at Universal Pictures to write and direct a feature based on the famed Ray Nelson short story 8 O’Clock in the Morning . Strike Entertainment partners Eric Newman and Marc Abraham are producing. The story is about a man who awakens one morning with the crystal-clear realization that we are surrounded daily by the presence of aliens that are controlling society. It was owned by the studio because it was used as the basis for the 1988 John Carpenter film They Live . In that film, aliens were discovered through the use of special glasses. None of that is being used here, and the film is not considered a remake. Reeves last directed the remake Let Me In and before that Cloverfield . He said he saw what could be his next directing assignment as soon as he read the short story by Nelson, a sci-fi author/cartoonist who was a pal of Philip K. Dick and who as a young man invented that nerd staple the propeller beanie. “I saw an opportunity to do a movie that w

Universal Wants To Get Their Hands On "Oblivion" & Have Tom Cruise Star

Universal Pictures has emerged as the front-runner to finance and distribute Oblivion , the Joseph Kosinski-directed sci-fi project that has Tom Cruise in early talks to star. The studio has entered into exclusive negotiations for a deal that would carry progress to production language, with a goal to begin shooting in October. The deal hinges on Kosinski's ability to bring in the film at around the $100 million mark. Cruise doesn't have a deal at this point, but they are talking. Deadline told you last week that Universal was among three studios chasing the film. The film was scripted by William Monahan, with Karl Gajdusek currently rewriting. Oblivion recently shook loose from Disney, where Kosinski made his feature directorial debut on Tron: Legacy. HBO's Game of Thrones - Things Creators Want You To Know

John Davis will produce the adaptation of the book of short stories that Bradbury wrote in the late 1940s about humans trying colonize Mars. In three structures, the stories dealt with attempts to settle Mars and the Martians’ efforts to fight the humans off, the colonization of the red planet and a nuclear war that eventually forces most of the humans to return to Earth. In the aftermath of the war, humans become the new Martians. A TV miniseries was made in 1980 by NBC and the BBC that was written by Richard Matheson and saw Rock Hudson leading the cast. Universal acquired the feature rights in 1997, where Steven Spielberg and Davis, among other producers, tried to get a project off the ground.
