Alvin Sargent To Lend A Hand To Spider-Man Reboot

Alvin Sargent To Lend A Hand To Spider-Man Reboot The veteran screenwriter (and repeat Spidey scribe) has been brought on board to fine-tune Columbia’s "Spider-Man" reboot being directed by Marc Webb. The studio is working off a script by Jamie Vanderbilt, who wrote “Zodiac” and a draft of “Spider-Man 4” before the studio scrapped its plans for the sequel to re-start the series. Sargent is doing a production polish as the studio runs with eight legs toward a planned shoot later this year. Sargent, 83, is practically part of the Peter Parker family, having worked on every single “Spider-Man” movie. The acclaimed writer of hefty dramas like 1980s “Ordinary People” and 1973’s “Paper Moon" has become the studio’s go-to guy for punching up weighty scenes. The new “Spider-Man” is rumored to be more emotionally anchored and realistic than the previous movies. Word is that Peter Parker will be a 17-year-old high school kid struggling with shifting hormones and an outsider s

Wachowski Brother's Shopping Secret ‘Hard R Lesbian’ Sci-Fi

Wachowski Brother's Shopping Secret ‘Hard R Lesbian’ Sci-Fi Little has been heard from The Matrix team of Larry and Andy Wachowski since 2008's Speed Racer crashed. I'm told they are circulating a new script that brings them back to terrain they covered in 1996's Bound, a heist film with a lesbian romance. This one's a drama that focuses on a "hard R" homosexual relationship between a U.S. soldier and an Iraqi. It's a cinema verite-style treatment that begins in the near future and then spans back over years that include the current war in Iraq. I've heard the siblings completed the script, want to direct it next, and that it is out to financiers. It sounds far afield of their trademark stuff, but then again, The Matrix seemed pretty far out when the siblings first pitched it. Will furnish more info when I get it. Bound is a 1996 neo-noir crime thriller film directed by the Wachowski brothers. It is about a woman (Jennifer Tilly) who longs t

NBC Has Cancelled "Heroes"

NBC Has Cancelled "Heroes" The network seriously mulled bringing back "Heroes" for a shortened final season to wrap up the serialized show. In the end, given the fairly high cost of the drama, the show's consistently declining ratings and the number of new hour-longs coming to NBC next season, the network decided the UMS-produced series wasn't worth an additional season. Sources are still leaving the door open to conclude the show with a special or movie, but tabling that verdict until after upfronts. The show has long had a rocky relationship with its fans. Out of the gate, "Heroes" was a big hit for the network -- an ethnically diverse big-concept ensemble that performed well overseas. It was NBC's "Lost." But the show's writers struggled to keep the show's twisting narrative on track. Characters were killed off and resurrected with regularity. Narrative threads were started, then abandoned. Unlike "Lost," t

"Flashforward" Cancelled And "V" Survives

"Flashforward" Cancelled And "V" Survives ABC has canceled underperforming freshman drama "FlashForward." The high-concept drama premiered strong, then dropped steadily in the ratings as the show struggled to find its creative footing. It's survived by fellow serialized sci-fi show, "V," which ABC has renewed. ABC will likely cut a few more titles, with "Scrubs" and "Better Off Ted" considered on life support. Avatar 2 Announcement Coming Soon

Avatar 2 Announcement Coming Soon James Cameron was in South Korea, once again preaching about how 3D will replace 2D as the standard format for films, TV, laptops, online content. Actually, when I pitched this to 20th Century Fox four-and-a-half years ago, I said, ‘You know, we’re going to spend a lot of money and time and energy creating not only a process but the assets, the CG assets, we call them - all the models of every rock and tree and plant and creature and the muscle rigs for all the creatures and the facial rigging for the main characters and all that’… huge, millions and millions of dollars. So it really makes sense to think of it as the potential start of a franchise, if you will, or a saga that plays out over several acts, each movie being an act of that saga. I’m going to be focusing on the ocean on Pandora, which will be equally rich and diverse and crazy and imaginative, but it just won’t be a rain forest. I’m not saying we won’t see what we’ve already seen; we’ll

Pixels Short To Be Made Into A Film

Pixels Short To Be Made Into A Film The much-buzzed-about short featuring 1980s video game characters attacking New York City, is heading for the big-screen. The French filmmaker behind “Pixels,” Patrick Jean, has teamed up with Adam Sandler’s production banner Happy Madison to develop a big-screen take. The team is in talks with Columbia, where Happy Madison has its first-look deal, to set up the project at the studio. The project is still in the early stages and no writer is on board but the plan is to make a “Ghostbusters”-style action comedy in which characters come out of a video game to wreak havoc in the real world. “Pixels,” abetted by a thumbs-up from filmmaker Edgar Wright, became a viral hit in April with its pixelated versions of Tetris, Space Invaders, Frogger, Pac-Man and others invading NYC first, then the world.
