TV Review: Tyrant “Gone Fishing” By: Brandon Wolfe The launch season of ‘ Tyrant ’ has not amounted to great television. The story of a Middle Eastern nation in the throes of social upheaval and the balance of power among the family that rules over it is one that could have easily made for a compelling series, but has instead resulted in a leaden, deeply uninteresting soap opera. The series has bungled matters every step of the way. Its story arc shambles along lifelessly. Its characters are one-note ciphers. Its cast is largely bland and underqualified. Its dialogue is torturously overwritten, horribly flat and unnatural. It has a premise that affords it the opportunity to say something substantial about real-world issues, yet it squanders that potential at every turn. By any reasonable metric, ‘Tyrant’ is a failure. Lakeshore Entertainment is moving forward with a reboot of the vampire action franchise, hiring Cory Goodman to write the script. The first Underworld film, directed by Len Wiseman and starring Kate Beckinsale , was released in 2003. Playing the strong vampire Selena made Beckinsale into a bankable action star, and three films followed in 2006 (Underworld: Evolution), 2009 (prequel Underworld: Rise of the Lycans) and 2012 (Underworld: Awakening). Underworld: Awakening, the 3D film that saw Beckinsale reprise her role as Selene, was the top earner in the franchise, taking in $160 million worldwide. The vampires versus werewolves franchise has grossed $458.2 million worldwide. Goodman wrote the script for the 2011 film Priest , starring Paul Bettany . X-Men: First Class scribes Ashley Miller and Zack Stentz are going a little looney, and directors Glenn Ficarra and John Requa may soon join them. The power writing duo has been hired to write the untitled Acme movie project being developed by Warner Bros. At the same time, Ficarra and Requa, who directed Crazy Stupid Love for the studio, are in early negotiations to direct the project, which has its roots in Warners' classic Looney Tunes cartoons. Steve Carell , who toplined Crazy Stupid Love, is attached to star in the project, which is being produced by Dan Lin and Roy Lee. The latter two were behind the mega-successful and franchise-launching The Lego Movie, and the studio and producers are envisioning the Acme project as an event movie that will also launch a franchise.
