Justin Lin Set to Direct Star Trek 3

The Fast & Furious director has been chosen to replace Roberto Orci. The story of Star Trek 3 's production problems have unfortunately overtaken the actual shooting and planned release of the film, leaving Trekkers to worry about the future for this divisive reboot franchise. One big question was answered on Monday, as Paramount announced that Justin Lin was signed to direct, taking over the center chair for the departed Roberto Orci (whose stays on to produce). The question of whether Lin was the right choice certainly is a valuable one. Known for directing four of the successful Fast & Furious films, Lin brings a fast-car style of excitement that Star Trek has never had. He's a proven commodity on big budget productions, essentially breathing in new life to a franchise that had honestly gotten stale - you can only show so many hot women, fast cars, and actors who can't act before audiences ask for more. Perhaps it's time for Star Trek to return to it

Kelly Reilly Joins True Detective Season 2

The cast for the second season of True Detective is several steps closer to completion. Colin Farrell and Vince Vaughn are confirmed (and Taylor Kitsch said recently that his deal is done), and now the show has added yet more names, with Kelly Reilly, Michael Irby, Abigail Spencer and Leven Rambin all reportedly signing on. Set in California locales, and once more written by Nic Pizzolatto, the new season sees Farrell as Velcoro, a compromised detective whose allegiances are torn between his masters in a corrupt police department and the mobster who owns him. Vaughn will play Frank Semyon, a career criminal in danger of losing his empire when his move into legitimate enterprise is upended by the murder of a business partner. Rachel McAdams is reported to be close to a deal to play police detective Ani Bezzerides. Irby is playing Elvis Ilinca, McAdams’ police partner, but the other new arrivals’ roles are shrouded in secrecy for now. Justin Lin is set to direct the first two

Set in several California locales, and once more written by Nic Pizzolatto, the new season sees Farrell as play Velcoro, a compromised detective whose allegiances are torn between his masters in a corrupt police department and the mobster who owns him. Vaughn will play Frank Semyon, a career criminal in danger of losing his empire when his move into legitimate enterprise is upended by the murder of a business partner. The season will run as eight hour-long episodes and is scheduled to start shooting this autumn in California. Justin Lin , who has also been rumored as attached, was confirmed in the same press release by the cable channel as directing the first two episodes. No information was provided about other p

Justin Lin's untitled Bourne film will open in theaters Aug. 14, 2015. The next chapter in the action-spy franchise returns Jeremy Renner in the role of Aaron Cross following the 2012 box office success of The Bourne Legacy. It's the first time Lin has directed a Bourne pic for Universal. He's most famous for directing the Fast & Furious movies, but isn't at the helm of Fast & Furious 7 , which has become shrouded in tragedy following the death of Paul Walker in a car crash during a hiatus from shooting. Longtime Bourne producer Frank Marshall is returning for the next installment, and will produce alongside Jeffrey Weiner and Ben Smith for Captivate. Lin will also produce for his Perfect Storm Entertainment. Inspired by author Robert Ludlum's book series, the Bourne film franchise underwent a major transformation with the departure of star Matt Damon and arrival of Renner in the lead role in The Bourne Legacy. Universal also announced a Aug. 8,

The Bourne Identity Franchise In Justin Lin's Hands

Universal Pictures has tapped the director of one of the studio’s most lucrative and successful franchises to take on the fifth installment of The Bourne Identity franchise . Justin Lin will direct the sequel to the Tony Gilroy-directed The Bourne Legacy , the pic that kicked off storyline of Aaron Cross, the character played by Jeremy Renner . Renner is set to return as Cross in a story hatched by ‘Invictus’ and ‘Sherlock Holmes’ scribe Anthony Peckham. Frank Marshall and Captivate Entertainment’s Ben Smith and Jeffrey Weiner are also back as producers, and Lin also will produce through his Perfect Storm banner. I’m hearing a summer 2015 release is being eyed for this one, though the studio is saying it doesn’t know when it will open. Universal chairman Donna Langley, co-president of production Peter Cramer, and VP Production Anikah McLaren will oversee the project for the studio. Bourne Legacy , released in 2012, grossed $276 million worldwide. Lin has plenty of fans at Univer

Another Set Back For Terminator Film

Things are starting to move on The Terminator franchise, but a plan by rights owner Megan Ellison and Arnold Schwarzenegger to put the first of two pictures in production for the fourth quarter of 2012 has forced director Justin Lin to drop out. But borrowing the film’s signature phrase “ I’ll be back ,” Lin has left the door open to a return if Ellison and Schwarzenegger will wait until he completes the sixth installment of The Fast and the Furious franchise. The Terminator franchise has been under the radar since Ellison’s Annapurna Films spent over $20 million to buy film rights during the Cannes Film Festival, with Lin and Schwarzenegger attached. Lin wants to make the film but simply won’t be available, the same situation that prompted him to withdraw from Summit’s Highlander. Lin has been working closely with Schwarzenegger and Ellison to figure a way to end the James Cameron-hatched battle between humans and the cyborgs of Skynet. It would require some effort for Ellison to

Will Sarah Connor Return In Terminator 5?

When Sarah Connor ( Linda Hamilton ) was thanklessly killed off in barely a single passing line in Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines , it was a crushing blow to us fans of the series. And so it was for Terminator 5 director Justin Lin, who may be planning to bring her back. ''Sarah Connor is such a big part of the franchise, you know,'' Lin said in an interview with Moviehole . ''Yeah, I mean, I've always been surprised how in part 3 [Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines] she was just like ... It was like one line and she was gone.'' This is the rest of the exchange: Clint: She was dead, yeah, yeah. It was insulting, yeah. Lin: Yeah, like leukemia and ... But I think the great thing about this franchise is you have ... You can actually have different canons because you have the element of time travel. So, there's a way of kind of respecting all the works but also able to create a new time line. Clint: That's right. You can go back a

Justin Lin Talks Terminator With Arnold and James Cameron

We have reported before that Justin Lin will be directing the next installment in the Terminator franchise. Today ThePlaylist  is reporting that Lin has talked to Arnold and James Cameron about the upcoming film. He is what they talked about “ ‘ Terminator ’ is something I’ve been having a lot of fun with,” Lin told us in an interview to support forthcoming video release of “ Fast Five .” “Just even this week, I had a great meeting with Arnold and James Cameron , just sitting down unofficially. And James is so gracious because he’s not part of the project, he’s not going to be producing, but it was great of him just as a filmmaker to take time out to just talk.” His next will film will be The sixth film in the Fast and Furious franchise. Fast Five which Lin directed earned over $600 million worldwide, “Fast Five” is one of the biggest hits of the year, and not only is it the most successful entry in the franchise so far, director Justin Lin proved there is still plenty of fue

Rumor:Paul Walker To Play Kyle Reese In Terminator 5

Please remember this is strictly a RUMOR, nothing has been confirmed. whatsplaying is reporting that Paul Walker ’s name keeps coming up - could he possibly be Lin ’s pick for Kyle Reese ? Despite Mr Schwarzenegger’s recent scandlous issues, Megan Ellison - who recently inherited Skynet from the bankless Halcyon - is pushing on with her plan to make a new Terminator movie. As we reported exclusively in January, Justin Lin (Fast Five) has been shopping around a new Terminator movie, one that Arnold Schwarzenegger has agreed to be a part of, with Universal showing the most interest at the time (No studio is currently onboard). From the sounds of things, the big guy does have a fairly substantial role in the new story - which is said to involve that original timeline being torn, again - but this Terminator would mostly be anchored by a new, younger male lead (Paul Walker’s name keeps coming up - could he possibly be Lin’s pick for Kyle Reese?). Oh, and I think that’s where th

Justin Lin Talks Terminator & Arnold Schwarzenegger

Collider got the chance to talk  Fast Five director Justin Lin about the possibility of him directing a new Terminator film and working with Arnold Schwarzenegger .  Briefly, Lin says he has a take on Terminator he would like to see and that he’s spoken with Arnold Schwarzenegger. However, he’s also looking at other projects and hasn't decided what will be his next directing gig. Speaking of big-budget movies and studio franchises, there’s a lot of talk about you getting to do the Terminator franchise. Is this happening? Are you looking forward to it? JUSTIN LIN: I think one of the great things is that when I got started, no one would return my calls, and now I get a lot of phone calls, which is good. I have options. Terminator was one of my favorite films growing up. And I feel I have a take that I would love to see, and I’ve talked with Arnold and we’ve talked and we’ll see. Again, I would love to do it, but it has to be the right circumstances. It has to be the r

Universal Looking To Reboot Terminator Franchise

Shortly after Arnold Schwarzenegger left the Governor’s Mansion and Tweeted his desire to resume his acting career, there seems to finally be some action on his signature franchise, The Terminator . I’m told that interest is kicking back up. One interested party: Universal , which is looking for a directing vehicle for Justin Lin . He helmed the last three installments of The Fast and the Furious franchise , including the latest Fast Five , which Universal releases April 29. I’ve heard that the plan would be to possibly pair him with Chris Morgan, who aside from Fast Five has credits on big scale Universal films that include the upcoming Keanu Reeves actioner 47 Ronin and Wanted . Now I enjoyed the Fast and Furious films for what they were, but Lin helming a Terminator film doesn't give me much faith in the movie. Here is what I am hearing the film might be based off of: The film would  take place in a post-apocalyptic battleground, and factors in an element of time travel

Fast and Furious "Fast Five" Confirmed

Fast and Furious "Fast Five" Confirmed Universal Pictures is hitting the accelerator on a fifth installment of "Fast and Furious," currently being referred to as "Fast Five." Studio has closed deals with Vin Diesel, Paul Walker, director Justin Lin and producer Neal Moritz to return to the franchise, which has become one of the studio's most lucrative. Diesel and Walker sat out the third chapter in the series but returned for last year's fourth installment, which was the highest-grossing "Fast and Furious" film and Universal's top grosser of 2009. Its box office haul was more than $350 million worldwide. Chris Morgan is writing "Fast Five," marking the third time he and Lin have teamed for a "Fast and Furious" film. The story finds protags Dom (Diesel) and Brian (Walker) as fugitives being pursued by relentless lawmen. Lensing will begin later this year for a 2011 release. Original Films' Moritz has produced e
