In a seven-figure preemptive deal, Sony Pictures is collaborating with Ryan Murphy on One Hit Wonders, a musical comedy pitch that will be written as a star vehicle for Gwyneth Paltrow, Reese Witherspoon, Cameron Diaz, Beyonce and Andy Samberg . Murphy is attached to direct, and he will write the script with his Glee cohorts Brad Falchuk and Ian Brennan. Murphy will produce with Paltrow (who has practically become a Glee cast member) and the latter makes her debut as a producer on this film. Murphy hopes to direct it after he completes The Normal Heart. Paltrow, Witherspoon and Diaz will play three singers who each scored a top hit song in the 1990s before watching their careers go down the drain. They decide to form a super group. The competition during Oscar season in 1999 was tough because Saving Private Ryan was excellent and so was The Thin Red Line, but SHAKESPEARE IN LOVE came out the winner, deservingly so. I think it’s because the film was not just about celebration of love, but it’s also celebration of literature, performance and theater and the genius behind some of the great plays in history, so timeless that those works remain a source of inspiration for many playwrights and filmmakers today. In a bonus segment of this blu-ray, you’d find one of the filmmakers said a statement that I fully agree with, that statement was.. if William Shakespeare were alive today, he’d have a five-picture deal with Warner Bros. and drive a Porsche. (cough) CONTAGION and The Walking Dead put some attention back on Centers For Disease Control , just like Dan Brown’s book Deception Point and the recent movie Apollo 18 made NASA seem like it still matters somehow (cough), oh excuse me, I may have caught a bug or something (cough!). CONTAGION is an ambitious paranoia movie that’s too big for its own good. Sure it has great Oscar worthy A-list talents but Soderbergh puts more focus on the symptoms and the lethal effect that the virus has on the characters than the characters themselves. It’s always a gamble when you’re dealing with such huge cast, you run the risk of paying little to no attention to some of them.
