January 2013 has turned into an exceptional month for new films. With releases like Gangster Squad , Broken City , and even Promised Land offering deeper, non-throwaway fare,  HANSEL & GRETEL: WITCH HUNTERS  arrives needing to prove its meddle to keep this surprising January run going. Check out my review to learn more.11 When one considers the predicament of a sequel, there can be no doubt that a sometimes unfair spotlight is cast upon them - unrealistic fan expectations, coupled with those of the studio, usually produce mixed results. However, those sequels which hold their own, sometimes outdoing their brethren, do so for sound reasons: an improvement in the story, deeper character interactions, and a general feel that the stakes have been raised. Think about what works in The Empire Strikes Back, The Bourne Supremacy, Star Trek II, or The Two Towers and one can easily identify these and other commonalities.
