Lily James (Downton Abbey) will star as Cinderella in Disney’s upcoming live-action interpretation of the classic tale. Kenneth Branagh will direct, with Cate Blanchett playing the evil stepmother. After directing one of the most talked-about films at Sundance Ain’t Them Bodies Saints , David Lowery has hired on with writing partner Toby Halbrooks to script Pete’s Dragon for Disney and producer Jim Whitaker. I’m told they will reinvent the core story of a venerable Disney family film. It will not be a musical and at this point Lowery is just engaged as writer. The original 1977 Pete’s Dragon mixed an animated fire-breather with a live-action cast of actors that included Mickey Rooney, Red Buttons, Shelley Winters, Helen Reddy and Jim Dale , with Sean Marshall playing the orphan boy who comes to a town with his magical dragon, his abusive adoptive parents in hot pursuit. It is certainly a departure for Lowery, who made the jump from editor to director on Saints, a gritty drama he wrote and directed that stars Rooney Mara, Rami Malek, Casey Affleck and Ben Foster. Hot on the heels of another splashy revisionist fairy tale opening in Oz The Great and Powerful , Disney is in talks with UK-based writer Joe Ahearne to reinvent its Beauty And The Beast franchise . Ahearne most recently scripted Trance, the film that Danny Boyle directed and then completed between his production of the Opening Ceremonies of the last Summer Olympics in London. This will be live action, and most certainly 3D. Disney is calling this film The Beast , and considering the subject matter of Trance – an art auctioneer is pummeled so badly by his criminal cohorts that a hypnotherapist is needed to coax out the memories of where he hid a priceless painting — indicates that this revisionist take on Beauty and the Beast could be a bit on the dark side. Despite the fact that it arrived in November across the pond, Disney’s latest ‘toon Wreck-It Ralph has had to cool its digital heels until the school holidays over here. But if you’ve heard good things about the short film Paperman that plays before Ralph, and you're itching to see it, you’re in luck: Disney has put it online, and you can see it below. It might be part of the studio’s strategy now that John Kahrs’ film has been nominated in the Animated Short Oscar category, but it’s still great to have the film where more people can watch it, because Paperman is really something special. Kahrs and his team have blended computer and hand drawn animation for a beautiful little tale of boy-meets-girl that takes place in a '40s-style universe but looks like nothing you’ve seen before. Red Dawn is a remake that vacillates between gritty war feature and bubble-gum drama, doing neither particularly well. In the genre of war movies, there are generally two kinds that Hollywood produces: ones that display the heavy trauma associated with war; and the mindless, unrealistic action flick that insults our intelligence with its implausibility. Both have their detractors - who can watch Saving Private Ryan more than once per year without wanting to slash their wrists for displaying war in such a graphic manner? In the latter category, the action is so unbelievable - whether it be people surviving a massive explosion or somehow beating someone twice their size - that you never really feel for the characters when they experience difficulty, thus losing any buy-in and therefore interest. Disney's alt.fairy tale Maleficent starts shooting today and to mark the occasion in style, the studio has given everyone a free pass to the Magic Kingdom with special valet parking by Goofy. OK, they haven't, but they have released a stunning first look at the movie's title character, the magnificently moody villain as played by Angelina Jolie . Yes, the horns are still there. No, we're no longer sore about the valet parking thing. Kermit the Frog and Miss Piggy have been making the media rounds a lot lately, and their stop in Las Vegas yesterday brought some pretty exciting news. It was at Disney's CinemaCon panel that president of production Sean Bailey announced that there will officially be a " Muppets 2 ." This is something we've heard plenty about already, like the fact Jason Segel won't be involved and the movie will introduce plenty of new characters. But it's nice to have the movie finally confirmed by Disney so that we know we can look forward to it coming out... well, eventually. Bailey didn't have any more details to share about the movie other than the fact it is actually happening. Disney has feature film plans for Mr. Toad’s Wild Ride , one of its longest-running theme park rides. The studio has set iconic commercials and video director Pete Candeland to develop a live-action/CGI mix feature that will bring to life a theme park ride that originated in Disneyland on its opening in 1955. The twisting, turning ride was also popular at Walt Disney World in Florida, but the geniuses at the park closed the ride in 1998 and replaced it with The Many Adventures Of Winnie The Pooh, which by comparison is a 10-minute nap for parents. Mr. Toad’s Wild Ride is based on Disney’s adaptation of The Wind In The Willows . Tron: Legacy producer Justin Springer will produce Mr. Toad’s Wild Ride, and the studio is looking for a writer to draft the plot into a film. Disney has tapped Robert Stromberg to make his feature directorial debut on Maleficent , the Linda Woolverton-scripted revisionist take on the Sleeping Beauty fairy tale that is being constructed as a star vehicle for Angelina Jolie to play the villainess. While Stromberg is new to the director’s chair, he is no stranger to dealing with big-ticket spectacle films. He has been production designer on Avatar and Alice In Wonderland, and Disney’s upcoming Oz The Great And Powerful. He also worked on visual effects for such films as 2012, Pirates Of The Caribbean: At World’s End and Master And Commander. Joe Roth is producing. This gives Disney feature heads Sean Bailey and Rich Ross another tentpole feature to complement the Marvel product, with A-list talent.
