The well-cast but poorly-edited The Counselor takes too long to suck us in.   Warning: Boring times and SPOILERS ahead! Do you have control of your life once the 'big decision' is made? Job? That's the premise of The Counselor , a well-cast but horribly-edited film that stunningly wastes all of its assets, making us realize that bad decisions do have consequences. A lawyer ( Michael Fassbender ) on the financial ropes enters the drug trafficking world, only to see his 'investment' stolen by the scheming girlfriend of his naive partner Reiner ( Javier Bardem ). The “Parks and Rec” star, embroiled in real-life sex-tape scandal in the ’80s, wouldn’t miss a movie with that title, right? Rob Lowe has scored a significant role in the Cameron Diaz and Jason Segel comedy “ Sex Tape ” — though it sounds like he’ll be keeping his clothes on this time around. The 49-year-old actor is set to play a mysterious, high-strung toy company CEO who accidentally gets hold of a sex tape the husband-wife pair Segel and Diaz make to rejuvenate their marriage. Rob Corddry plays the pair’s pal who helps them try to steal the embarrassing private performance back from Lowe, while Jack Black is set to play the CEO of a major porn company. Screenwriter Kate Angelo (“The Back-up Plan”) wrote the comedy, which is being directed by Jake Kasdan (“Orange County”). Despite his belief that he can get involved with narco-trading, make a mint and pull the escape cord any time he likes, Fassbender’s main man soon ends up in real trouble, on the run from seriously nasty people. Cameron Diaz is attached to star in the female revenge comedy “ The Other Woman ” for Fox, a representative for the actress told TheWrap . The film, with a script by Melissa Stack, is about a woman who finds out she is the other woman in a love triangle. She meets up with the wife in order to conspire and get revenge against the husband. Kristen Wiig is also under consideration for a role in the film, the representative for Diaz said. The high-concept story is in the vein of "The First Wives Club," but with a younger skew. Julie Yorn is producing through her LBI Prods. banner, while Daria Cercek will oversee the project for the studio. Stack ("I Want to F--- Your Sister") is a Black List alumni. As expected, Penelope Cruz has joined the stellar cast of the Ridley Scott -directed The Counselor , and I’m told that she is planning to team up again this summer with director Pedro Almodovar in Los Amantes Pasajeros, the comedy he will shoot this summer in Madrid. The title’s translation is The Brief Lovers, and reports say it’s about an affair on an airplane. It is what the actress considers a special collaboration between herself and Almodovar, whose films together include Broken Embraces, Volver, All About My Mother and Live Flesh. Cruz joins Paz Vega, Lola Dueñas, Javier Cámara, Cecelia Roth, Carlos Areces, Raúl Arévalo and José Maria Yazpik. What to Expect When You're Expecting tries very hard to achieve that, but never gets it quite right. In a seven-figure preemptive deal, Sony Pictures is collaborating with Ryan Murphy on One Hit Wonders, a musical comedy pitch that will be written as a star vehicle for Gwyneth Paltrow, Reese Witherspoon, Cameron Diaz, Beyonce and Andy Samberg . Murphy is attached to direct, and he will write the script with his Glee cohorts Brad Falchuk and Ian Brennan. Murphy will produce with Paltrow (who has practically become a Glee cast member) and the latter makes her debut as a producer on this film. Murphy hopes to direct it after he completes The Normal Heart. Paltrow, Witherspoon and Diaz will play three singers who each scored a top hit song in the 1990s before watching their careers go down the drain. They decide to form a super group.
