According to Variety Paramount Pictures has given an awards season release date of Nov. 23 for “ Allied ,” Brad Pitt ’s World War II romantic thriller. “Allied,” produced by GK Films, also stars Marion Cotillard and is directed by Robert Zemeckis. The film is shooting in London, with production also taking place in the Canary Islands. Pitt is portraying an intelligence officer in 1942 North Africa who encounters a French Resistance fighter, played by Cotillard, on a deadly mission behind enemy lines. Reunited in London, their relationship is threatened by the extreme pressures of the war. Zameckis is directing from a script by Steven Knight (“The Hundred-Foot Journey”). Graham King, who won an Oscar for “The Departed,” is producing with Zemeckis, and Steve Starkey. According to Deadline Sony Pictures is in talks with Charlize Theron to come aboard The Gray Man , an adaptation of the Mark Greaney novel that at one time had Brad Pitt ready to star with James Gray directing.   Theron is in the process of attaching herself as the star, with her Denver and Delilah label coming aboard as producers alongside Joe Roth. The script is by Joe and Anthony Russo, who were at one time attached as directors before they got busy with Captain America: Civil War and the next two installments of The Avengers . The thriller focuses on an expert CIA op-turned-assassin who is forced to evade adversaries as he saves the lives of daughters he didn’t know he had. Obviously that is harder to do when the protagonist is female, but I guess they’ll figure it out. According to the director, he’s planning an adaptation of Jules Verne’s 20,000 Leagues Under The Sea . It’s certainly an ambitious project, and one that has defeated the likes of McG and, most famously in recent years, David Fincher . Netflix has been making big inroads to acquire original content to go alongside the back catalogs it buys up. The company has made plenty of moves with TV, but is ramping up its efforts to make movies, dropping cash on deals with the likes of Adam Sandler and Idris Elba . Now it has made its biggest commitment yet, grabbing distribution rights to War Machine , which will star Brad Pitt . Animal Kingdom and The Rover’s director David Michod will be behind the camera, and he’s also adapted the script from late journalist Michael Hastings’ book The Operators: The Wild And Terrifying Inside Story Of America’s War In Afghanistan . Pitt will star as a top general in the US armed forces, overseeing the conflict and a mission that is riddled with problems, corruption and cock-ups. It’s all loosely based on General Stanley McChrystal, who oversaw the US operation in Afghanistan and thought himself the bee’s knees until he badmouthed the White House, was recalled and resigned. Lionsgate has picked up Alpha , a sci-fi project that sees Robopocalypse author Daniel H. Wilson teaming up with Brad Pitt and his Plan B banner. Anthony Scott Burns, a Canadian filmmaker, is attached to make his feature debut with Alpha , which Pitt would produce with his Plan B partners Dede Gardner and Jeremy Kleiner. Wilson came up with the original idea and will write the screenplay. Details of the project are being kept secret, but it is known to be sci-fi survival story that has shades of Jack London, the author behind such tales as White Fang and The Call of the Wild. Part of the pitch involved a fake commercial, shot by Burns, for a fictional company that is central to the story. Wilson is the author behind books with a robotics bent, such as How to Survive a Robot Uprising and Robogenesis as well as Robopocalypse, which Steven Spielberg came close to adapting. Military personnel and veterans are invited to celebrate Veterans Day in the United States and Remembrance Day in Canada with free admission all day tomorrow to Sony Pictures Entertainment’s feature film Fury. At select theaters nationwide, veterans and military personnel who present proper military identification will receive free admission to the powerful David Ayer film starring Brad Pitt .
