Star Wars Helmer JJ Abrams Tweets out a major announcement.
For those of us anxiously awaiting any word of a teaser trailer for Star Wars VII: The Force Awakens, it's been a tough month. First, it was set to appear in front of The Hunger Games: Mockingjay, Part 1, then with the upcoming Disney musical Into the Woods, and then with The Hobbit: The Battle of Five Armies. Well today we finally found out the WHERE and even the WHEN, but one question remains.
Check out this image which Director J.J. Abrams released earlier this morning:
From the image, we know HOW LONG (88 seconds), we know WHEN (This Friday), and WHERE ('Select Theaters'), but it's not clear WHAT feature will play host. Regal Cinemas released the following list of theaters, but did not specify which showing would play host:
Irvine, CA Edwards Irvine Spectrum 22 & IMAX
San Diego, CA Edwards Mira Mesa Stadium 18 IMAX & RPX
Atlanta, GA Regal Atlantic Station Stadium 18 IMAX & RPX
Chicago, IL Regal City North Stadium 14 IMAX & RPX
New York, NY Regal Union Square Stadium 14
Warrington, PA Regal Warrington Crossing Stadium 22 & IMAX
Knoxville, TN Regal Pinnacle Stadium 18 IMAX & RPX
Houston, TX Edwards Houston Marq’E Stadium 23 IMAX & RPX
Seattle, WA Regal Thornton Place Stadium 14 & IMAX
Could Mockingjay be the roundabout lucky winner? Or will Big Hero 6 get a big boost as people crowd the theater, only to escape once the teaser is finished? Even though both new releases this week (Horrible Bosses 2 and The Penguins of Madagascar) aren't Disney, don't be surprised to see it show up there, and then explode on the Internet shortly afterwards.
Which begs the question: should you even go in the first place, knowing the teaser will eventually arrive on digital? Our call is simple: go see a movie for the movie, not the trailer. If you happen to see the teaser, all the better for you. We debated the necessity of teasers this week in our Inside the Bucket podcast, and encourage you to drop in for that portion, which is located under our Rants and Raves segment.
In the end, it's great to see J.J.'s vision finally arriving this week, but how and when you see it will depend on how much you want to spend just to see something you can see later in the week.
