There Are Some Surprises

With the year coming close to the end we thought we would wrap up the Top Ten films of 2010. The list ranges from A toy in a box to sexy vampires, a boy wizard, a green ogre and even a titan if you can believe that. I was surprised to see some of the box office totals for these film.

1.Toy Story 3

The Pixar threequel, shot in 3D, grossed $1.1 billion at the box office. Domestically, it grossed a handy $415 million. The news overseas was even better, where Toy Story 3 grossed $648.1 million. Not bad for a franchise that took a decade-long hiatus. The extra charge for a 3D ticket no doubt boosted the bottom line for Pixar and Disney.

2. Alice in Wonderland

In the months leading up to the release of Disney’s Alice in Wonderland, there was rampant speculation about whether audiences would embrace Tim Burton’s retelling of Lewis Carroll’s classic tale. The movie became a hit, and had impressive playability. Domestically, Alice grossed $334.2 million. Overseas, it soared, grossing a whopping $690.1 million. Worldwide, Alice earned $1 billion at the box office to join Toy Story 3 on the top 10 list of all time. Toy Story 3 is No. 5; Alice, No. 6.

3. Inception

Filmmaker Christopher Nolan further buoyed his standing with Inception, which grossed $825.4 million at the worldwide box office for Warner Bros. The Leonardo DiCaprio starrer grossed $292.5 million domestically, and $532.9 million internationally—all without 3D.

4. Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 1

The boy wizard may been a teenager now, but he’s lost not of his magic. Warner Bros.’ Deathly Hallows grossed $265.7 million domestically and $558.4 million overseas for a worldwide total of $824.1 million. Franchise has been a goldmine for Warners, explaining why the studio decided to split J.K. Rowling’s final book into two parts. There can never be too much of a good thing.

5. Shrek Forever After

The fourth installment in the popular Shrek franchise grossed $739.8 million worldwide for partners DreamWorks Animation and Paramount. Domestically, the 3D film grossed $238.5 million. It did double the business internationally, where the green ogre bullied his way to $501.4 million before bidding goodbye to audiences for good.

6. The Twilight Saga: Eclipse

The third film in Summit Entertainment’s blockbuster franchise continued to have a sharp bite. Eclipse grossed $693.5 million worldwide, including a domestic booty of $300.5 million and international total of $392.9 million.

7. Iron Man 2

The Robert Downey Jr. starrer grossed $621.8 million worldwide, besting the $585.2 global haul for Iron Man. Domestically, the sequel grossed $312.1 million. Overseas, $309.6 million.

8. Despicable Me

The 3D film was a huge victory for Universal, which had a tough year otherwise. Descipable Me grossed $539.9 million globally. Kids pic grossed $250.5 million domestically and $289.4 internationally. Can anyone say franchise?

9. How to Train Your Dragon

This original toon from DreamWorks animation was beloved among the critics. It didn’t do so bad commercially either. Dragon grossed $494.9 worldwide for DreamWorks Animation and Paramount. The 3D toon grossed $217.6 million domestically and $277.3 million internationally.

10. Clash of the Titans

Warner Bros.’ remake of the cult classic did far better than expected, grossing $493.2 million worldwide. Warners’ decision to convert the film to 3D was a smart one, since it boosted overall grosses. Domestically, the movie grossed $163.2 million. Internationally, it earned $330 million.

Winona Ryder- An "Alienation" Expert? We're halfway checked out for the holiday weekend, so let's end with bit of comedy. A litigious videogame player is calling Winona Ryder to testify as an expert in "alienation." Erik Estavillo has filed a $1 million lawsuit in California Superior Court against Activision Blizzard, publisher of "World of Warcraft," saying it "maintain(s) a harmful virtual environment to many of its customers by forcing them to follow the game's sneaky and deceitful practices." The plaintiff says he suffers from several mental health problems brought on by WoW's "alienating" features, such as forcing beginners to walk or run to get from one point to another instead of speedier options available to those who master the game or buy an expansion pack.
