Movie Review: Tully

First Image From Mel Gibson's "Hacksaw Ridge"

With his cast and crew in place, Mel Gibson is now rolling the cameras on his new directorial effort, returning to the wartime milieu that has served him well in the past.

With a script from Gibson’s old collaborator Randall Wallace, Hacksaw Ridge is based on the true story of Desmond T. Doss, who served as a US Army medic in World War II during the battle of Okinawa and refused to kill. Despite his objections, his incredible valour saving lives during the battle saw him awarded the Medal of Honor, the first time a conscientious objector has won the decoration.

Garfield is playing Doss, with Vaughn as Sergeant Howell, the man whose job it is to get raw recruits ready for combat, Sam Worthington as Captain Glover, in charge of the unit and Luke Bracey is Smitty Ryker, the tough alpha of the platoon. Teresa Palmer will be Doss’ true love Dorothy Shutte, with Rachel Griffiths as his mother, Bertha.

Regular listeners to the Empire Podcast (sorry about the whole Call Me By Your Name theme ear worm, incidentally) will recall that we had Taron Egerton as a guest on the 300th episode, recorded in front of an audience on Valentine's Day. The film, which has been through at least one previous incarnation (Michael Gracey directing Tom Hardy in the lead) is reuniting the Eddie The Eagle team of Egerton, director Dexter Fletcher and producer Matthew Vaughn, who has been trying to get the movie made for a while, with Elton's blessing and the support of his company, Rocket Pictures.

Featuring a script by Lee Hall, Rocketman will follow the career of the artist formerly known as Reginald Dwight, from a prodigy at the Royal Academy of Music to a global superstar, through his influential and enduring musical partnership w…
