Depp Wants Marshall To Direct "The Thin Man" Remake

Depp Wants Marshall To Direct "The Thin Man" Remake

Pirates of the Caribbean star Johnny Depp has been aggressively courting his Pirates 4 director Rob Marshall (Chicago, Memoirs of a Geisha) to direct him once again in a remake of The Thin Man at Warner Bros. It'd be a fitting follow-up to Depp's turn as the rum-soaked Captain Jack Sparrow: The famous detective novel by Dashiell Hammett centers on Nick Charles who — after marrying wealthy, young socialite Norah — gives up a career as a hard-boiled gumshoe to become a semi-professional alcoholic and full-time trophy husband.

The Thin Man certainly wasn't the Philip Marlowe of its day when it was first published in 1934 — Hammett never even wrote a sequel — but it did become a hit six-film franchise at MGM (with William Powell starring as Nick Charles and Myrna Loy playing Nora Charles) and an NBC series that ran from 1957 to 1959.

There's no script yet for the remake, but we're told that Depp is eager to play the role and has been looking to develop the property through his Warner Bros.–based Infinitum Nihil production outfit (run by his sister, Christi Dembrowski), with former WB executive turned producer Kevin McCormick also producing.

Meanwhile, we also hear that once Marshall wraps production on Pirates 4 later this year, he’ll be meeting with Universal execs and producer Marc Platt about the possibility of directing a motion picture based on Broadway's Wicked, which, unlike Thin Man, actually has a script as well as many other significant directors in contention for the gig.

Winona Ryder- An "Alienation" Expert?

Winona Ryder- An "Alienation" Expert? We're halfway checked out for the holiday weekend, so let's end with bit of comedy. A litigious videogame player is calling Winona Ryder to testify as an expert in "alienation." Erik Estavillo has filed a $1 million lawsuit in California Superior Court against Activision Blizzard, publisher of "World of Warcraft," saying it "maintain(s) a harmful virtual environment to many of its customers by forcing them to follow the game's sneaky and deceitful practices." The plaintiff says he suffers from several mental health problems brought on by WoW's "alienating" features, such as forcing beginners to walk or run to get from one point to another instead of speedier options available to those who master the game or buy an expansion pack. Estavillo says that the slow pace is "deceitful" because more time = more subscription revenue for Activision. Here's where Winona Ryder comes...

Sex Tape Review: Overly Sexual, Rude, Vulgar, and Absolutely Hilarious

The raunchy Sex Tape will divide audiences and critics, but who cares? Sex Tape suggests a growing practice among loving partners: that of making a raunchy testament of their escapades for posterity. But what happens when that evidence gets seen by friends, neighbors, and even the mailman? This is the plot that pits Jay (Jason Segel) and Annie (Cameron Diaz) in an effort to secure every iPad gift Jay has given, his record company playlists being the envy of the recipients, but which has also inadvertently spread the video to every device. The reason for the act - termed in the movie as pulling "the full Lincoln " for its three-hour length - stems from the couple's non-existent social life, brought on by the constant demands of their children. The couple has a lot to lose: a burgeoning business relationship between Annie and Hank (Rob Lowe) could end if the iPad she's given to Hank exposes the video, and so the couple sets out to reclaim and wipe the incrim...
