The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey Review. Is It Worth The Journey?

The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey Review By: MattInRC The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey is big on imagery, long on talk, and falls short in a couple of critical areas. But go see it anyways. Upon watching the first trailer for Fall's highly anticipated The Hobbit , I was hesitant to grant it any credit beyond mere curiosity. Its older brother, the incredible Lord of the Rings trilogy, occupies a special place on most filmgoers' top 20 lists. The series touched audiences in a way that still reverberates throughout Hollywood: one cannot watch a Medieval war-epic made after 2003 without seeing LOTR's footprints somewhere. It was with this pedigree that a slow and confusing trailer appeared earlier this year, touching off speculation that perhaps Director Peter Jackson's lightning in a bottle had been spent. And while The Hobbit is slow at parts and missing any memorable action sequences, its heart still beats with the resounding pulse of Middle-earth.

The Hobbit Trilogy Has Cost $561 Million So Far

That figure includes the major 266 days of filming with actors, although it doesn't include an additional two months or so of "pick-up" shoots. Making the movie trilogy The Hobbit has cost more than half a billion dollars so far, double the amount spent on the three movies in the The Lord of the Rings series. That figure includes the major 266 days of filming with actors that was completed last year, although it doesn't include an additional two months or so of "pick-up" shoots done this year. There will likely also be additional postproduction costs as the next two movies are completed. The Hobbit: The Desolation Of Smaug Trailer & New Images- Through March 31, production had cost 676 million New Zealand dollars, or $561 million at current exchange rates, according to financial documents filed Friday in New Zealand, where the movies are being made. Distributor Warner Bros. and director Peter Jackson may consider it money well spent. To dat

Here, alone with Gollum, on the shores of an underground lake, the unassuming Bilbo Baggins not only discovers depths ofguile and courage that surprise even him, he also ga

The Hobbit Rumors Cleared Up

The Hobbit Rumors Cleared Up Since producer Peter Jackson announced that he would make two films from J.R.R. Tolkien's The Hobbit, we've wondered whether he'll split the book in two or make the book the basis of the first movie and use the second to bridge The Hobbit with The Lord of the Rings. Well, he cleared it up for us over the weekend: The two movies will be based solely on the book, even though the films' director, Guillermo del Toro, had suggested the latter approach. "The second Hobbit script is still based on the Hobbit novel," Jackson said in a group interview Sunday in Beverly Hills, Calif., after a press conference for The Lovely Bones. "The Hobbit novel is in two parts." The Hobbit tells the story of a young Bilbo Baggins' quest for a treasure guarded by the dragon Smaug. In the more youth-oriented adventure, Tolkien established the world of Middle-earth, where he later set his Lord of the Rings trilogy. Whereas each of the Lord of

See all the images after the Jump... IAN MCKELLEN (GANDALF) ”He’s in fantastic form,” Peter Jackson says of McKellen. ”In a way, his role in The Hobbit has more technical difficulties than Lord of the Rings did, because he has scenes with 14 smaller characters — obviously the dwarves and the hobbit are shorter… I remember saying to him [laughs], ”Look, this isn’t Waiting for Godot or King Lear. This is The Hobbit. This is the real thing.” PETER JACKSON WITH MARTIN FREEMAN ”There’s no way you can pace yourself for shoots like these,” Jackson says. ”When we were going through the schedule for The Hobbit, I felt a terrible drop in my stomach when I saw that we’d be shooting for 254 days. We’re only 12 days short of The Lord of the Rings even though we’re only doing two movies. When I saw

Guillermo del Toro Has Left The Hobbit

Guillermo del Toro Has Left The Hobbit I've got some pretty terrible news for all of you. I hate to be the barer of bad news, but Guillermo del Toro is no longer going to direct The Hobbit . Last week Del Toro gave an update on what was currently going on with The Hobbit, and I knew if something didn't actually start happening quick the production would start falling apart, and now Del Toro has dropped out of the project. This is all due to MGM's financial problems. They can't seem to get it together, and Del Toro just couldn't wait around anymore. After all... he's got a ton of other film projects that he wants to start working on. Del Toro announced the news himself through the Lord of the Rings fan site The One Ring . So, Del Toro will not direct The Hobbit, but he will continue to collaborate with Peter Jackson, Fran Walsh and Philippa Boyens on the films scripts, until they are completely done. Who will step in to take del Toro's place as dire

The Hobbit: The Desolation Of Smaug Review. Rewarding Follow-Up To Middle Earth's Growing Adventure.

The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug Review By: MattInRC TWIITER: #DesolationofSmaug is an action-packed and rewarding follow-up to Middle Earth's growing adventure. The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug is a more vigorous and livelier affair than its predecessor. Thank Middle Earth for that! As a fan of good movies rather than a loyal fan to a particular franchise, my disappointment with the hugely-successful but critically marred The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey knew few bounds - our heroes felt less than those presented in the epic and totally satisfying Lord of the Rings trilogy , and the story itself felt like trudging through a rain storm. Luckily, one cannot say the same for its sequel: The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug is a wild, gregarious, and often pretty picture that should satisfy purists and casual fans alike. From the moment Director Peter Jackson makes a very Hitchcockian appearance in the opening scene, we get the feeling that this one will be
