Don’t expect a second helping of shawarma.

The post-credits stinger has been a staple of the Marvel Cinematic Universe going all the way back to Nick Fury’s introduction at the tail end of Iron Man, but the streak will be broken in Avengers: Age of Ultron. The film will include a mid-credits epilogue, but nothing at the very end, director Joss Whedon tells Entertainment Weekly.
“We all came at it separately—we don’t want to chase that,” Whedon said of the famous dinner scene in the original film. “That was a jewel and a weird little quirk. There is nothing at the very end. And that’s not a fake-out. We want people to know so they don’t sit there for ten minutes and then go: ‘Son of a bitch! I’ll kill them!’”
Whedon says an attempt was made by all involved to concoct another memorable post-credits treat, but claims that “it didn’t seem to lend itself in the same way, and we wanted to be true to what felt right. The first rule of making a sequel is take the best moments and do something else. Don’t do the Indiana Jones gun trick again differently. Just go somewhere else. Don’t try to hit the same highs, because people will sense it.”
Also, don’t expect the film to provide our first glimpse at the character of Captain Marvel, as widely rumored, though Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige promises that a female character of some import will make a surprise appearance. “It’s not a big deal. But it’s a good character,” he says.
Actresses Linda Cardellini and Julie Delpy were recently confirmed as making appearances in the film, though it remains up in the air as to whom either is playing. Feige and Whedon have revealed that the trainer of a young Black Widow will be depicted in a flashback within the film, so that’s one possibility.
