Total Recall Getting Buzz At CinemaCon

Going into Sony's final-day presentation at CinemaCon on Thursday, exhibitors expected The Amazing Spider-Man, Men in Black 3 and James Bond entry Skyfall to be the highlights -- but they didn't count on falling so hard for sci-fi action pic Total Recall.

Opening on Aug. 3, Total Recall -- based on the 1990 film and Philip K. Dick's short story We Can Remember It for You Wholesale -- was directed by Len Wiseman and stars Colin Farrell, Kate Beckinsale, Jessica Biel and Bryan Cranston.

Footage from the film prompted widespread buzz among exhibitors, who remarked on its Blade Runner-like quality.

TOTAL RECALL Trailer-

Total Recall is an action thriller about reality and memory, inspired anew by the famous short story “We Can Remember It For You Wholesale” by Philip K. Dick. Welcome to Rekall, the company that can turn your dreams into real memories. For a factory worker named Douglas Quaid (Colin Farrell), even though he’s got a beautiful wife (Kate Beckinsale) whom he loves, the mind-trip sounds like the perfect vacation from his frustrating life – real memories of life as a super-spy might be just what he needs. But when the procedure goes horribly wrong, Quaid becomes a hunted man. Finding himself on the run from the police – controlled by Chancellor Cohaagen (Bryan Cranston) – there is no one Quaid can trust, except possibly a rebel fighter (Jessica Biel) working for the head of the underground resistance (Bill Nighy). The line between fantasy and reality gets blurred and the fate of his world hangs in the balance as Quaid discovers his true identity, his true love, and his true fate. The film is directed by Len Wiseman. The screenplay is by Kurt Wimmer and Mark Bomback and the screen story is by Ronald Shusett & Dan O’Bannon and Jon Povill. The producers are Neal H. Moritz and Toby Jaffe.

Sony president of worldwide distribution Rory Bruer led off the presentation at The Colosseum at Caesars Palace by saying the studio is potentially looking at its best year ever, thanks to its upcoming lineup, which includes MIB 3, Spider-Man, Adam Sandler's R-rated summer comedy That's My Boy (another favorite among theater owners), Skyfall, Hotel Transylvania, Premium Rush and Resident Evil: Retribution.

Bruer screened footage from all the films as part of his pitch, as well as footage from summer dramedy Hope Springs, starring Meryl Street, Tommy Lee Jones and Steve Carell.

"It's as great a slate as this studio has had in 30 years," Bruer said.

Sony departed from other studios by simply showed a reel rather than parading out stars and directors of its films.

Naked Gun Reboot On It's Way

If you've seen Naked Gun - or The Naked Gun: From The Files Of Police Squad ! to give its full title - you'll know that it's a comedic masterpiece that springboards off astonishing levels of silliness and random spoofery. Leslie Nielsen's Frank Drebin is a loveable buffoon for the ages, even when he's discussing his dicky prostrate. Do not, however, expect the Ed Helms -starring reboot to adopt exactly the same tack. According to Naked Gun director/co-writer David Zucker, talking up Airplane!'s screening at Nashville's Wild West Comedy Festival, the new version will not attempt to hit the same spoofy sweet spot as the Zuckers and Jim Abrahams' 1988 comedy. "It won’t be like the Naked Gun that I did," Zucker revealed. "It may be good, but it won’t be that kind of movie. They’re going to use the title. They asked me if I wanted to produce. They’re nice people, but they don’t want to do that style of spoof that I do." One departure
