BOB MARLEY: ONE LOVE Featurette

James Cameron Main Man To Direct 'Final Destination 5'

James Cameron Main Man To Direct 'Final Destination 5'

Steven Quale, the second unit director for "Avatar," has been tapped to helm "Final Destination 5," the latest installment in New Line's horror franchise.

The "Destination" movies, which center on the idea that one can't cheat death, usually begin with a group of people who survive a catastrophe because of the intervention of one person who has a premonition. Death, however, will have its due, and the survivors end up expiring in elaborate Rube Goldberg-like fashion.

Eric Heisserer ("The Thing") wrote the script, and Craig Perry is producing the pic, which has a September 13 start date in Vancouver.

While most movie series by the fifth installment are getting long in the tooth, "Destination" seems to have found new vigor following the unexpected success of the fourth installment, which overcame bad reviews and grossed more than $182 million worldwide on a budget of about $40 million.

New Line, following the 3D lead of parent Warner Bros., went out to helmers who are proficient in that world as well as seeking someone with technical prowess, with Quale reportedly vying for the job along with Bradley Parker, the second unit/visual effects director on "Let the Right One In" remake "Let Me In," and Charles Gibson, the second unit/visual effects director on the "Pirates of the Caribbean" movies.

Quale is a James Cameron protege, having started as a PA on the director's 1989 sci-fi movie "The Abyss." He was the second unit director for Cameron's "Titanic" and co-directed the filmmaker's undersea doc "Aliens of the Deep." Insiders say that Cameron even lobbed a call to New Line toppers to give them his recommendation.

Naked Gun Reboot On It's Way

If you've seen Naked Gun - or The Naked Gun: From The Files Of Police Squad ! to give its full title - you'll know that it's a comedic masterpiece that springboards off astonishing levels of silliness and random spoofery. Leslie Nielsen's Frank Drebin is a loveable buffoon for the ages, even when he's discussing his dicky prostrate. Do not, however, expect the Ed Helms -starring reboot to adopt exactly the same tack. According to Naked Gun director/co-writer David Zucker, talking up Airplane!'s screening at Nashville's Wild West Comedy Festival, the new version will not attempt to hit the same spoofy sweet spot as the Zuckers and Jim Abrahams' 1988 comedy. "It won’t be like the Naked Gun that I did," Zucker revealed. "It may be good, but it won’t be that kind of movie. They’re going to use the title. They asked me if I wanted to produce. They’re nice people, but they don’t want to do that style of spoof that I do." One departure
