Disney To Release Blu-ray's In 3D

Disney To Release Blu-ray's In 3D

Disney, which says it has produced more 3D content than any other major, will begin rolling out 3D Blu-ray titles this year beginning with "Disney's A Christmas Carol" and followed by "Alice in Wonderland" and "Toy Story 3."

Television sets with 3D capabilities are all the rage at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas this week, so it's no surprise that studios have waited until now to officially commit to the technology by announcing specific titles.

Hence, Sony also said Thursday that its first 3D Blu-ray title will be "Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs," which will come out about the same time Sony Electronics debuts its Bravia 3D-enabled LCD television sets.

And Tuesday, DreamWorks Animation said it would team with Technicolor to offer up a 3D Blu-ray version of "Monsters vs. Aliens" as a promotional item to purchasers of Samsung's 3D-capable TV sets and Blu-ray players.

No specific street dates were announced.

As for Disney, it has been producing 3D content since at least 1953, when the first of its series of shorts called "Adventures in Music" was made, as was the animated short starring Chip and Dale called "Working for Peanuts."

Scenes from the latter, in fact, were made available on 3D Blu-ray on Thursday, though only as part of a promotional item called "3D Showcase Disc," which Disney is giving to manufacturers to bundle with their 3D hardware.

So, technically speaking, Disney's "3D Showcase Disc" is the public's first chance to experience true 3D Blu-ray since the technical specifications were finalized in December. You do, however, have to buy the hardware for viewing the disc just to get your hands on it. And don't forget to purchase the special glasses, which aren't necessarily included with the hardware or the disc.

Naked Gun Reboot On It's Way

If you've seen Naked Gun - or The Naked Gun: From The Files Of Police Squad ! to give its full title - you'll know that it's a comedic masterpiece that springboards off astonishing levels of silliness and random spoofery. Leslie Nielsen's Frank Drebin is a loveable buffoon for the ages, even when he's discussing his dicky prostrate. Do not, however, expect the Ed Helms -starring reboot to adopt exactly the same tack. According to Naked Gun director/co-writer David Zucker, talking up Airplane!'s screening at Nashville's Wild West Comedy Festival, the new version will not attempt to hit the same spoofy sweet spot as the Zuckers and Jim Abrahams' 1988 comedy. "It won’t be like the Naked Gun that I did," Zucker revealed. "It may be good, but it won’t be that kind of movie. They’re going to use the title. They asked me if I wanted to produce. They’re nice people, but they don’t want to do that style of spoof that I do." One departure
