Dawn Of The Planet Of The Apes Comic-Con Recap

Director Matt Reeves has big shoes to fill, stepping into the second instalment of a reborn franchise with Dawn Of The Planet Of The Apes . He came to Comic-Con to talk through his plans for next year's film and brought his cast for the ride. "I was obsessed with Planet Of The Apes as a child; I wanted to be an ape," says Reeves. "When I saw Rise, I felt that watching it made me an ape, and that happened because of what Rupert and Andy Serkis and Weta did, which was to connect with what being an ape was, and I wanted to honour that and carry it forward. We wanted to do a Caesar-centric story that started in the world of the apes. "When that movie ended there was a viral apocalypse that was about to begin, and we all know that that story goes on a trajectory towards the original Planet Of The Apes. So how could we tell that story and bring in humans worthy of it? That's what we've tried to do." Reeves brought just-finished footage, but of c

The Conjuring Rules The Box-Office

It was a very good week to be a horrific, vengeful spirit at the US Box Office, but Ryan Reynolds – who also debuted with something to do with ghosts – is probably feeling a little vengeful himself after a dismal showing with not one, but two movies. James Wan’s The Conjuring easily won the weekend, scoring high marks from critics and an impressive $41.5 million according to studio estimates. Given the thrifty $20 million budget, that’s a big slab of win. Despicable Me 2 slipped to second place with $25 million but was still more than muscular enough to fight off Turbo – the first of this week’s Reynolds-heavy releases to underperform. DreamWorks’ racing snail ‘toon crawled into third with $21.5 million for the weekend and $31.2 million given its mid-week launch. Fourth was Grown Ups 2 , which made $20 million, ahead of Bruce Willis and the OAP CIA gang in Red 2 , launching with a low $18.5 million. Pacific Rim’s monsters vs. robots appeal faltered slightly, falling from thi

X-Men Assemble At Comic-Con

Finishing The Wolverine panel, Hugh Jackman makes a plea: "One of the great things about being in a movie like this is the chance to do other things, and particularly being able to do smaller more indie movies, and I'd like to introduce you to the director of a film I've got coming up. It's a small movie, won't take long, hopefully Fox won't mind. Ladies and gentlemen, Bryan Singer!" A surprise panel for X-Men: Days Of Future Past ! And as it turns out, quite a big one. Says Singer: "It's been like a decade. It's been a great journey making X-Men: Days Of Future Past in Montreal. None of the visual effects are complete and we still have a month of shooting to go, but I've put together a little bit of footage." The big news? It's Wolverine who goes back in time to his younger body and has to convince the younger Professor X and Magneto to team up and change the future. "You will do for me what I once did for you. Lo

Captain America: The Winter Soldier Comic-Con Recap

Captain America: The Winter Soldier didn't have the advantage of a Loki-ed up Tom Hiddleston to introduce it, but did boast some really impressive first footage of the sequel, with the entire cast there to explain what's up. First, the clip. We saw a lengthy scene where Cap ( Chris Evans ) gets in a lift with some of the tactical team he's working with. They're joined by chattering office workers in suits, then some more agents. But Steve Rogers notices a bead of sweat rolling down one man's neck, notes the shock sticks another one has strapped to his leg, and makes a generous offer. "Before we begin, would any of you gentlemen like to get out?" The men explode into action, trying to trap Cap in magnetic cuffs and using the shock sticks to try to stun him. Things, it's fair to say, do not go according to plan, and soon Rogers is the only man standing. But this reveals that there's trouble at the heart of (it looks like) S.H.I.E.L.D. itself.

Guardians Of The Galaxy Cast At Comic-Con

It's very nearly unbelievable. Despite the fact that shooting started only two weeks ago, director James Gunn and the cast of Guardians Of The Galaxy assembled a sizzle reel of several minutes to give us a taste of the barmy, very funny and possibly completely mental space adventure coming from Marvel next year. The footage began with 'Star-Lord', aka Peter Quill ( Chris Pratt ), entering an apparently deserted space ship (or temple? It's unclear). He picks up an artefact he finds there, to be shocked by Djimon Hounsou's Korath The Pursuer. "Who are you?" he demands. "I'm Star-Lord!" says Pratt, a little defiantly. "Who?" asks Korath, nonplussed. Set phasers for knowing, ladies and gentlemen. Yes, it turns out Star Lord is not quite as badass as he thinks, and next we sees he's part of a usual suspects line-up being examined by John C. Reilly's Rhomann Dey, in a roll-call of the Guardians. Here's Zoe Saldana&#
