Star Trek Into Darkness Plot Reveled

J.J. Abrams is not above teasing Star Trek fans, what with this three frame sneak peek at Spock in a fire retardant suit on Conan in October and the nine-minute IMAX preview set to play before certain screenings of The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey in December. But now that this official plot synopsis has landed, there are finally some concrete (albeit vague) facts to ponder. Below is the synopsis for your delectation and appreciation – note the more generic "explosive action thriller" language alongside the more intriguing "a war-zone world" and "one-man weapon of mass destruction" tidbits. “In Summer 2013, pioneering director J.J. Abrams will deliver an explosive action thriller that takes Star Trek Into Darkness . When the crew of the Enterprise is called back home, they find an unstoppable force of terror from within their own organisation has detonated the fleet and everything it stands for, leaving our world in a state of crisis. SyFy To Deliver Another Waterworld Film Or Show

NBC Universal’s Syfy cable network is making a $100 million play for the videogame market, as I report in the new issue of FORBES. What I didn’t mention in that story is that Syfy is also pushing into the movie business — and that it may even remake “Waterworld,” one of the most notorious Hollywood bombs of all time. Syfy has been looking for a way into film for years, ever since NBC merged with Vivendi Universal Entertainment in 2004. That marriage provided Syfy — known as Sci Fi Channel until a 2009 brand makeover — with access to Universal Pictures’ vast trove of intellectual property.11 “Having a theatrical film label is not only a natural fit for Syfy,” says Dave Howe, the network’s president. “It’s also a gap in the marketplace.” In Hollywood, “science fiction” is virtually synonymous with “megabudget CGI-laden summer action movie.” Howe and his team at Syfy saw an opportunity for a different kind of science fiction film, one driven less by expensive stars and special ef

Rumor Time. Joseph Gordon-Levitt To Be Cast In Justice League Film

Though a certain saga set in a galaxy far, far away is currently the biggest topic of rumor  there is still plenty of life in speculation over who and what will be part of Warner Bros.' Justice League film, which is aiming at a 2015 launch. Now Hitfix’s Drew McWeeny has sources telling him that Joseph Gordon-Levitt is moving from likely candidate to early casting talks. Of course, nothing has officially been announced about the film beyond Gangster Squad’s Will Beall writing at least a few drafts of the script. So this remains in the world of the rumour for now. But it’s certainly a tantalising one, given that – spoiler alert here for anyone who still hasn’t seen The Dark Knight Rises or any discussion thereof and might complain – Gordon-Levitt’s John Blake is A) revealed to have the legal name Robin and B) appears to take on the Bat-mantle at the end. McWeeny, who is not a man to run any old rumor, has it that Gordon-Levitt will indeed be taking on the full Bat-duty fo

Kellan Lutz To Star In Tatua

Now that the Twilight Saga series is over, the fittest vampire in the pack, Kellan Lutz , has found a new potential franchise to sink his teeth into. Lutz has signed to star in the indie genre film Tatua . Based on an original concept by comic book creators Paul Jenkins and Rob Prior, Tatua is about a man with a rare blood type that allows him to be tattooed with a powerful ink. He is able to pull those weapons straight off his skin, giving him an enviable leg up as a covert assassin. Aaron Sims, the vfx wiz who helmed the viral sensation short Archetype, is set to make his directing debut on the film, says Rick Schwartz, whose Overnight Productions has lined up the financing for a March production start in Toronto. Paul Layden wrote the script, and Schwartz will produce with Todd Breau and Kari Hollend. Schwartz’s producing credits include the upcoming Machete Kills, Black Swan, The Departed and The Others. Schwartz tells me he wanted to find a genre film that was less expensiv

Final Video Blog For The Hobbit

Considering they beefed up Peter Jackson's The Hobbit into a trilogy halfway through production, it's not hard to believe they'll be cutting it close to finish the first installment before its premiere. But did you know they have only two days of wiggle room? Jackson has been walking fans through the production process via some intriguing production blogs from the set, and the latest takes us into the home stretch of finalizing the cut before the Nov. 28 New Zealand premiere (New Zealanders get to see it a few weeks before the rest of us). It's fascinating to see the well-oiled machine Jackson has assembled to crank these things out, but you have to wonder if this level of clinical refinement will scrub away some of the charm of the original Lord of the Rings trilogy. No Cameos By The Avengers In Iron Man 3

Marvel films are notorious for their cameos. They were a major part of plotting their biggest film to date— The Avengers . Speaking of the superhero team, don't expect them to come to Tony Stark's rescue. In Iron Man 3 (aside from War Machine), he won't have any extra support. The Avengers experience had a major effect on Stark. According to Marvel chief Kevin Feige, the hero's world has been rocked. He tells Empire Magazine that he's a changed man. "By the end of Avengers, when a portal is opened up in Manhattan and he's met Thor and The Hulk and the Chitauri are coming down on him, he realises that he doesn't know everything; we think that has had an effect on his psyche, and then his world is blown out from underneath him. "Don't count on Stark's superhero peers to bail him out. They've got their own problems to deal with. Iron Man 3 will be light on surprise appearances. "Iron Man 3 doesn't feature any of the o
