Arnold Explains Why "Crusade" Never Got Made

Elsewhere in our mammoth Arnie feature in this month's Empire, The Austrian Oak tells us about how his Total Recall director, Paul Verhoeven , got so close to making his passion project, Crusade – described by some as part Spartacus, part Conan – before it all fell apart. Not shying away from the anti-semitism and anti-arabian sentiments of the crusaders in question, it was going to be full-on, frank, vintage Verhoeven, with sets already built in Spain and cast ready to roll – including Robert Duvall, Jennifer Connelly, John Turturro , and Christopher McDonald – before it all disappeared into a lick of development hellfire. "It was all written and ready to go but then Paul started going crazy. We had the final meeting with the studio and we were all sitting at this boardroom table. They said, 'So the budget is $100 million. That's a lot of money. What kind of guarantees do you have that we will get it for 100 and it won't go up to 130?'" &q

Barricade DVD Review. How Bad Can It Be?

Barricade DVD Review By: MattInRC Here are three reasons why you shouldn't watch the WWE Studios horror flick Barricade : boring, boring, boring.- We guys always appreciate a good horror flick, even when there's no nudity or torture porn; every fan of the genre wants simply to be scared, to bend reality just enough so that we forget that what we're watching isn't real. To be honest, the genre is stuck in the mud, having played out every possible slasher scenario and every thriller treatment with mixed results. The WWE Studios straight-to-DVD Barricade is a perfect example of a genre that's been lost for some time, throwing every cliche into the mix, but failing at every turn to inspire any emotions from its audience. Dr. Terrence Shade ( Eric McCormack , Free Enterprise) has lost his wife Leah ( Jodi Thompson , 2012) to a terrible accident, and a year later is struggling to care for his two children, Cynthia ( Conner Dwelly , Once Upon a Time) and Jake

Trouble With The Curve Review

Trouble With the Curve Review By: MattInRC Is the feel-good baseball flick Trouble With the Curve another Clint Eastwood classic, or is it doomed for the minor leagues? Warning: major plot spoilers ahead. A common thread binds my favorite sports flicks Field of Dreams and Hoosiers : both suggest that the uniquely-crafted American games upon which they are based are so ingrained into our country's fabric that to remove one would be tantamount to severing a healthy extremity from our bodies. Oscar hopeful Trouble With The Curve challenges us to attach the same significance, but fails in its decidedly dull and slow pace. Atlanta Braves scout Gus ( Clint Eastwood , Heartbreak Ridge) is a crotchety old-school judge of baseball character whose declining health becomes a concern to daughter Mickey ( Amy Adams , The Muppets) and Gus' boss Pete Klein ( John Goodman , O Brother, Where Art Thou?). Klein and family go way back, but Gus is on the hot seat to return

Guillermo del Toro To Deliver The Strain

FX is going into business with Guillermo del Toro and Lost's Carlton Cuse. The male-leaning network is near a deal for a pilot order to The Strain , an adaptation of the book trilogy by del Toro and Chuck Hogan, The Hollywood Reporter has confirmed. First published in 2009, the series revolves around a vampire virus that infects New York and the CDC doctor, Ephraim "Eph" Goodweather, who investigates the case. Del Toro and Hogan, who co-penned the three-book series first published in 2009, will co-write the pilot with Lost's Cuse on board to help develop the project should it go to series and serve as an executive producer and showrunner. Sequels to the Strain include 2010's The Fall and the final installment, 2011's The Night Eternal. The project comes two days after the Oscar-nominated writer-director behind films including Pan's Labrynth and Hellboy -- alongside Southland scribe Sara Gran -- optioned Corrine May Botz's Nutshell Studies t

Baywatch Film Has Found It's Director

Summer may officially be over tomorrow, but that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t grab your rescue can and head for the beach, anyway: Our spies tell us that Reno 911 ! co-creator and star Robert Ben Garant will direct Paramount Pictures’ comedy adaptation of the David Hasselhoff–Pamela Anderson series, Baywatch , doing for that long-running series what Reno 911! did for COPS. The script is courtesy of Peter Tolan (creator of Rescue Me), who only a year ago had said that his take on the material was more akin to Stripes than the self-serious syndicated series’ mien, which makes sense, since Baywatch is being produced by Stripes director Ivan Reitman. Less clear is what Ben Garant's arrival means for the Tolan script, as Ben Garant is also the screenwriter of Fox's Night at the Museum franchise and may have ideas of his own. In the meantime, Ben Garant is in post-production on Hell Baby, a macabre comedy he co-directed and co-wrote with his old Reno 911! co-creator and co-st

A Knight’s Tale Series Coming To ABC

A Knight’s Tale , the 2001 feature starring Heath Ledger, is headed to the small screen in a series adaptation written by Battlestar Galactica developer/executive producer Ron Moore. ABC has bought the project, from Sony Pictures TV, with a script commitment. The Knight’s Tale feature was a 14th century romantic adventure set in the world of jousting to a music score of popular rock songs that centered on William Thatcher (Ledger), a peasant posing as a knight. The series is expected to stay close to the premise and the style of the movie — it is described as a medieval fantasy incorporating modern music and themes that follows the journey of a young man who starts out impersonating a knight of the realm and ends up becoming one. In addition to writing, Moore is executive producing with his producing partner at Tall Ship Prods. Maril Davis as well as the film’s writer-director-producer Brian Helgeland and producer Todd Black. The title is part of the Sony library as the movie, wh
