Movie Review: 'Brooklyn'

The period piece moves with a gentle grace, but it's story can't keep up. Review by Matt Cummings In Director John Crowley's period drama Brooklyn , the meager Irish woman Eilis (Saoirse Ronan) comes to America during the 1950's in search of a better life. Leaving behind the only world she's ever known, Eilis initially struggles in New York, working at a well-respected department store but feeling completely empty and homesick. Although she's set up in a boarding home with other Irish female immigrants, Eilis struggles to adjust to her new life, until she meets the Italian plumber Tony (Emory Cohen), who is immediately smitten with her. But when tragedy forces her to return home, Eilis is immediately courted by Jim (Domhnall Gleeson) and must make a difficult decision: stay and enjoy an opulent life or take a chance on Brooklyn and the love which awaits her. Based on the novel by Colm Toibin, Brooklyn is beautifully shot and well acted, with Ron

Paddington Review: A Sheer Delight

Paddington is a sheer delight, wrapped in marmalade and adorable furry bear hugs. Review by Matt Cummings American audiences have witnessed so many fantastic incarnations of Winnie the Pooh over the years that it might be hard to welcome a relative unknown to the game. Luckily, Paddington has arrived with enough warm hugs and simple values to make a strong case for its consideration. When a young bear travels from the forests of Darkest Peru to be adopted, Paddington (voiced by Ben Whishaw) soon learns that the London he knows from the 1940's is no longer there. Stuck in a train station with the tag 'Please look after this bear. Thank you.' around his neck, he soon finds a temporary home courtesy of Mary (Sally Hawkins) and Henry (Hugh Bonneville) Brown, who promise to help him locate the famous explorer who saved his Aunt and Uncle from taxidermy many years ago. Unfortunately, dark forces are plotting his demise, including the museum taxidermist Millicen

Thank you," and offer him a temporary haven. It looks as though his luck has changed until this rarest of bears catches the eye of a museum taxidermist. Please Leave A Comment-

Colin Firth Leaves Paddington

The Oscar winner speaks of a "Conspicuous Decoupling."  Actors leaving a film is not common, so when it happens it attracts a bit of attention. Such was the situation this week when we learned that Colin Firth had decided to leave the CGI/live-action Paddington . The actor who recently appeared in The Railway Man was supposed to voice the loveable British bear who's rather polite but terribly clumsy. However, in a statement released last week, Firth said the following: "After a period of denial, we’ve (the studio and Firth) chosen ‘conscious uncoupling,’” Again, it's not common to see actors leave roles after they've been announced - last year, Scarlett Johansson famously replaced Samantha Morton as the voice of the AI program in Spike Jonze’s Oscar-winning Her . More recently, Robert Downey Jr. was supposed to voice the genius dog in the animated Mr. Peabody & Sherman , but was replaced by Muppets Most Wanted 's Ty Burrell. Firt

PADDINGTON Trailer is Here

After the jump, check out the first trailer for the Christmas comedy featuring the voice of Colin Firth! Adapted from Michael Bond's beloved books, "Paddington" tells the story of a polite young bear from Peru with an endearing talent for comic chaos, who arrives in London in search of a home. Paddington has grown up deep in the Peruvian jungle with his Aunt Lucy who, inspired by a chance encounter with an English explorer, has raised her nephew to cook marmalade, listen to the BBC World Service, and dream of an exciting life in London. When an earthquake destroys their home, Aunt Lucy decides the time has come to smuggle her young nephew on board a boat bound for England, in search of a better life. Trusting of the kindness of strangers, she ties a label round his neck which simply reads 'Please look after this bear. Thank you.' Lost and alone at Paddington Station, Paddington soon finds that London is not the welcoming, well-mannered land of his d
