Variety is reporting " Baby Driver ” star Eiza Gonzalez has joined the ensemble of Universal’s “ Fast and Furious ” spinoff “ Hobbs and Shaw ” starring Dwayne Johnson and Jason Statham . The role was a last-minute addition, and sources say execs favored Gonzalez, but scheduling had to be worked out with Legendary’s “Godzilla vs. Kong,” which features Gonzalez and is also about to begin shooting. Idris Elba and Vanessa Kirby are also on board with David Leitch directing. “Fast and Furious” architect Chris Morgan penned the script. The film will see the titular, often-at-odds pair teaming up. It is unknown who Gonzalez will be playing. Since his arrival in the franchise’s fifth installment, Universal has tried to find a way to spin off Johnson’s Hobbs character, given his popularity with fans. Dwayne Johnson Instagrammed our first look of Vanessa Kirby as Hattie Shaw, sister of Deckard Shaw. “ Deadpool 2 ” director, David Leitch who also gave us “ John Wick ” and “ Atomic Blonde ” will direct Universal’s “ Fast & Furious ” spinoff movie, “ Hobbs and Shaw ” focusing on Dwayne Johnson ’s character Luke Hobbs and Jason Statham ’s character, Deckard Shaw, both of whom had appeared in recent installments of this franchise. This project was why Universal Pictures moved “Fast & Furious 9” to 2020. The main writer of this franchise, Chris Morgan, returns again to pen the script for this spinoff which reportedly will be about Diplomatic Security Service agent, Luke Hobbs and former bad guy turned Hobbs’ friend, Deckard Shaw (Statham) as they go off on their own adventure. Later this summer Idris Elba is releasing his directorial debut Yardie — but don’t go thinking that he’s putting acting on the back-burner. He’s just taken on a major new role, with Variety reporting that he's now lined up as the villain for Fast & Furious spin-off Hobbs and Shaw . Yes — that means Elba vs. The Rock and Jason Statham. Little is known about what Elba’s role will entail, but the script is currently being worked on by Chris Morgan who’s written every Fast entry since Tokyo Drift. As Universal guns the engine on the first planned spin-off from the Fast & Furious franchise, the studio has pinpointed the person it wants to wrangle Dwayne Johnson and Jason Statham for the film. John Wick and Atomic Blonde director David Leitch is directing the film. It makes sense that a film featuring the two would demand a director who has proven they can bring action scenes to life, and Leitch – who moved from stunt co-ordination and second unit work to co-direct the first Wick with Chad Stahelski – has certainly shown he's got the flair for it. Chris Morgan has written the script for the new film, which doesn't yet have a name, but should boast Johnson's Luke Hobbs and Statham's recently redeemed Deckard Shaw on their own mission, minus any candy asses. Universal wants this one in cinemas for July next year, and so it needs the wheels to hit the road quickly. Leitch's most recent job was directing Deadpool 2, which opens in the UK on 16 May
