Box Office Recap: September 7, 2014

Guardians leads again, but the Summer was one of the worst ever. Someone once said that you never know the bottom of something until you're down in it. Summer 2014 will definitely have something to say about that, as it attained levels of infamy unseen in over 30 years. While Guardians of the Galaxy easily held on to first place for the third-straight weekend, the news about the overall health of the Summer market was fairly grim. According to our friends at Box Office Mojo, the top 12 movies this weekend earned approximately $51.9 million, making it the lowest-grossing in two years ($51,85m). You would have to go back to September 5-7 2008, when the top 12 grossed $50.3 million, to see a similar competitor. The reason for such a horrible performance is simple: only one new film was released this week, at nearly one-third the theaters of a standard release. That film - the poorly-received The Identical - arrived at 11th place with just $1.91 million. Yes, you hea

2014 Big Movie Questions - Q3 Report

As Q3 comes to a close, we look back at several movie questions and make bold new predictions about the third quarter of 2014. As 2014 has unfolded, we've learned just how precarious the Hollywood film system is. Before summer arrived, we could see serious gaps in programming, especially once May ended. That did in fact happen, exposing a decent July (Dawn of the Planet of the Apes, Hercules, and The Purge: Anarchy) and a pretty awful August, with Guardians of the Galaxy being the only thing we could recommend. The year has delivered several memorable films ( Captain America: The Winter Solider and The LEGO Movie ), but what lessons have we learned about 2014 so far? Several questions we pondered back in January have finally had a chance to play out, so let's get to them. Has 2015 talk already eclipsed 2014? No, but there is some lingering concerns . 2014 has brought some amazing films like Godzilla , X-Men: Days of Future Past , Captain America: The Winter Soldier ,

Guardians Of The Galaxy Back On Top

Guardians soared once more. Stay seemed to linger reasonably enough, while Sin City suffered a bad time of it, enduring the sort of punishment that feels like you’re being hit in the face by a concrete slab. All in all, an interesting weekend at the US box office. The big winner was Marvel’s Guardians Of The Galaxy , which roared back to the top of the charts after spending a couple of weeks in second place, and that despite being out in theaters for a month now. Clearly audiences were ready for more from Star-Lord and the gang and the space oddities are now enjoying the highest domestic gross for any film at the US box office in 2014 ( Transformers: Age Of Extinction clings to the worldwide top spot like a robot with a locked servo). Guardians took in $17.6 million this weekend, pushing it to $251.8 million in the States and $489.4 million globally. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles was pushed down to second place after a couple of weeks at the top, earning $16.8 million this we

All The Marvel Easter Eggs In One Video

Before Marvel Studios came along, Easter eggs — or small lines or visual cues that are included in movies as nods to fans in the know — were few and unimportant. Stan Lee got his “ Spider-Man ” cameos, Wolverine joked that his suit wasn’t “yellow spandex,” and Lou Ferrigno was seen briefly in “ Hulk .” But with the advent of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, starting with “ Iron Man ” all the way through its newest release, “ Guardians of the Galaxy ,” Easter eggs have become an art. Sure, sometimes they’re still similar to the old ones — after all, Stan Lee still has had cameos in every MCU movie so far — but Marvel was the first studio to really ask its fans to rewatch, slow down, and magnify its movies to find all the secrets within, secrets which could be integral to the plot of future movies. Watch the clip after the Jump... Get More: Music News Captain America’s shield can be found in the first “Iron Man,” which at the time seemed like a throwaway, until we realiz

Guardians of the Galaxy Review: Misses Marvel's Bigger Picture

Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy takes too many liberties and makes too much fun to be truly great. Warning: Major Spoilers Ahead Walk up to anyone on the street and ask them if they're planning to see Guardians of the Galaxy , and you'll get the litany of responses. In fact, it's one of those films that either brings joy to one's face or crinkles of concern as to its premise. Who could blame the naysayers: the idea of a talking raccoon and a giant tree as major characters is bold to be sure Perhaps the riskiest movie from Marvel Studios to date - and one of the riskiest of the year - Guardians is a hefty helping of explosions, cheap one-liners, and pretty moments. And while many of those moments are pretty and pretty funny, it misses a great chance to properly introduce a universe teaming with heroes (and villains) far stronger than The Avengers . Terran Peter Quill (Chris Pratt) is a roguish sort who's been snatched from Earth and has lived most
