The Handmaid's Tale Season 1 Review

Based on the best-selling novel by Margaret Atwood, this series is set in Gilead, a totalitarian society in what used to be part of the United States. Gilead is ruled by a fundamentalist regime that treats women as property of the state, and is faced with environmental disasters and a plummeting birth rate. In a desperate attempt to repopulate a devastated world, the few remaining fertile women are forced into sexual servitude. One of these women, Offred, is determined to survive the terrifying world she lives in, and find the daughter that was taken from her. Yvonne Strahovski Joins Joseph Fiennes In The Handmaid's Tale

The small screen adaptation of Margaret Atwood's The Handmaid's Tale is gathering its cast. Joseph Fiennes signed on recently and Elisabeth Moss was already aboard. Now Yvonne Strahovski will join them. Atwood's story is set in an unspecified, dark future where a totalitarian society known as Gilead (once part of the United States) has embraced a twisted religious fundamentalism as the way to combat environmental chaos and a dropping birthrate. The leaders consider women to be property of the state, and fertile women are highly valued while being treated essentially as sexual slaves. Moss' Offred is the "handmaid" at Commander Waterford's (Fiennes) estate and is part of the effort to repopulate the world. She has to find a way to survive in a world of cruel leaders, domestic servants and spies, while also searching for the daughter that was taken from her. It's the sort of story that still has resonance in today's religiously split world and h

Movie Review: #HighRise

High-Rise is a gorgeous but insane, sexual mess. Review by Matt Cummings If the movie industry nowadays seems hell-bent on searching for the next billion-dollar franchise, 2016 has emphatically demonstrated that creativity - and especially unique productions - still drives the narrative. With the drama/thriller High-Rise , we get one of the weirdest, sexualized, insane, and pretty messes of the year. But it might not be enough to recommend you immediately check it out. Standing like a monolith among 1970's London, a new kind of apartment living has evolved: one in which every social class supposedly has the ability to live the good life. For Dr. Robert Laing (Tom Hiddleston), that opportunity also means starting anew from his former relationship. But almost immediately, Laing realizes that his new surroundings are anything but equal. He learns that "the architect" Royal (Jeremy Irons) maintains a lavish estate on the top floor, and that his minions just b

New HIGH-RISE Trailer Starring @twhiddleston

HIGH-RISE stars Hiddleston as Dr. Robert Laing, the newest resident of a luxurious apartment in a high-tech concrete skyscraper whose lofty location places him amongst the upper class. Laing quickly settles into high society life and meets the building’s eccentric tenants: Charlotte ( Miller ), his upstairs neighbor and bohemian single mother; Wilder ( Evans ), a charismatic documentarian who lives with his pregnant wife Helen ( Moss ); and Mr. Royal ( Irons ), the enigmatic architect who designed the building. Life seems like paradise to the solitude-seeking Laing. Watch the trailer after the Jump... Watch the trailer for HIGH-RISE, exclusively on Apple Trailers: http://trailers.apple.com/trailers/magnolia/highrise/ But as power outages become more frequent and building flaws emerge, particularly on the lower floors, the regimented social strata begins to crumble and the building becomes a battlefield in a literal class war. Nathan Fillion Cast As The Green Lantern

He's enjoying mainstream success as the star of ABC's Castle , but Nathan Fillion is still a fanboy favorite — and a fanboy himself. So the Firefly and Dr. Horrible alum totally geeked out when he was offered the voice role of DC Comics superhero Green Lantern in the DVD movie Green Lantern: Emerald Knights , due June 7 from Warner Bros. Animation. Emerald Knights is a series of vignettes about the Green Lantern Corps, an intergalactic police force. Fillion plays Hal Jordan, the Green Lantern of Earth's space sector, who mentors Arisia , a new recruit played by Mad Men's Elisabeth Moss . "I was always reading the comic books, I was always a spectator," Fillion says. "Now I feel like I own a little piece of Green Lantern ." And he's getting to share it with an old friend, Ryan Reynolds , who is starring in the Green Lantern feature film, which opens 10 days after the DVD comes out. Both actors got their big breaks together on the ABC sitcom T
