Training Day Series On It's Way To CBS

THR is reporting Antoine Fuqua will direct the follow-up to his 2001 feature film of the same name. TV's big remake push is showing no signs of slowing down. In a competitive situation, CBS has handed out a hefty pilot-production commitment to a Training Day follow-up based on the 2001 film of the same name, The Hollywood Reporter has learned. Based on the feature film from Warner Bros. and Village Roadshow Pictures, the potential series will take place 15 years after the movie. The planned Training Day series is set in the LAPD of 2015. ( Ethan Hawke and Denzel Washington starred in the feature.) Antoine Fuqua, who directed the feature film, will helm the pilot, which was written by feature writer and former LAPD detective Will Beall. Jerry Bruckheimer Television's Jerry Bruckheimer and Jonathan Littman will executive produce alongside Fuqua and Beall. The drama hails from Warner Bros. Television, where Bruckheimer is based, and Fuqua Films. Training Day comes a

Sony's 'The Equalizer' Gets a Sequel

We discuss the announcement and what possible directions the series could take. Story by Matt Cummings Robert McCall is returning to terrorize a thug near you. Collider is reporting that the 2014 surprise hit The Equalizer is getting a sequel, courtesy of beleaguered Sony Pictures. The original, loosely based on the 1980's television series, followed retired agent McCall (Denzel Washington) as he took down Russian gangsters with clock-like efficiency. The movie also starred Chloe Grace-Moretz, who played a prostitute that McCall ends up protecting after she is brutalized by her Russian pimp. The film, directed by Training Day alum Antione Fuqua, was hailed for its hard-boiled, Hard R violence, but also because it gave Washington the perfect vehicle to breath new life into the British gentlemen spy. The result was a worldwide take of $200 million on a $55m budget. Those sorts of numbers make sense to Sony, so it was only a matter of time before they announced a se

Ethan Hawke Joins The Magnificent Seven

Although the new version of The Magnificent Seven was feeling more like an Equalizer reunion, with Antoine Fuqua directing, Denzel Washington starring and one of the film’s co-stars, Haley Bennett , aboard, we now have a Training Day trifecta instead. Ethan Hawke has signed on to share the screen with his old sparring partner Washington. Chris Pratt is also set for the film, which will once more see a small town – in this case built around a gold mine –threatened by a ruthless baron and his gang of thugs. When they kill several people in their attempt to take the place over, a young widow (Bennett) hires a bounty hunter (Washington) to dispatch the bad guys, supplying him with the necessary funds to hire six gunmen to help him in his mission. Which is where Pratt and others come into play. John Lee Hancock and True Detective’s Nic Pizzolatto are among those who have contributed to the screenplay, adapted from the classic Seven Samurai, which became the first crack at a Magnifi

Chris Pratt Circling Magnificent Seven

If it wasn't enough for him to be a Cowboy Ninja Viking (all right, as an assassin with those skillsets), Chris Pratt is circling a role that would require only one of those abilities: according to Deadline , he’s in early talks to snatch a role in the new Magnificent Seven . Denzel Washington is locked in to star in this one, which his Training Day/The Equalizer collaborator Antoine Fuqua is directing. John Sturges’ 1960 take on the story – itself a remake of Akira Kurosawa’s Seven Samurai – saw a Mexican peasant village persuading seven gunfighters to help protect them from bandits. Fuqua’s version, which boasts a script featuring contributions from John Lee Hancock and True Detective’s Nic Pizzolatto, is reportedly set after the Civil War, as the Wild West era is coming to an end. MGM is backing this one, hoping to finally get the long-gestating film into production next year. If he signs, Pratt would play a character named Farraday who has been created for the c

The Equalizer Review: Old Meets New in a Viciously Delicious Throwdown

The Equalizer is the most visceral, stylish, and rewarding experience in quite awhile. Summer movies, take note. As we've been talking about this week , the 80's drama/action television program The Equalizer is getting the full-on movie treatment, courtesy of a duo of heavy hitters: Director Antoine Fuqua and his Training Day leading man Denzel Washington. For those of us who thrilled to the weekly exploits of former Company spy Robert McCall saving New Yorkers in trouble, the thought of a movie version has obviously piqued our interests. And while there's very little comparison here to the original, moviegoers are in for a violent and ultimately rewarding experience. Robert McCall (Washington) is a thoughtful, well-read middle-aged gentlemen working at a local hardware supply store, his life falling into neat patterns of cleanliness and a spartan-like behavior. But deep inside, McCall is holding back a violent past that saw him fake his own death in order t

The Equalizer Movie - What We Know (Conclusion)

Our Equalizer introduction wraps up with the episodes you must watch before seeing the movie. Our discussion of all things The Equalizer concludes with a look at some of the best episodes of the series. As audiences prepare to see Director Antoine Fuqua's vision for the 1980's iconic television series The Equalizer , all this week we're looking back at the characters, episodes, and other aspects of the show that helped to define it. In our final article, we'll discuss several memorable episodes, and explain how some of their themes could fit into the film's storyline. The Equalizer originally aired on CBS from 1985-1989 and was part of a series of new dramatic offerings that looked inside the world of spycraft and beyond the stylized Roger Moore James Bond movies. While shows like Scarecrow and Mrs. King used spies as a means to drive the romantic storyline, The Equalizer took a darker path, emphasizing the personal cost our heroes pay for defending o

The Equalizer Movie - What We Know (Part 2)

Our Equalizer introduction continues with a look at various members of Robert McCall's team. As audiences prepare to see Director Antoine Fuqua's vision for the 1980's iconic television series The Equalizer, all this week we'll be taking a look back at the characters, episodes, and other aspects of the show that helped to define it. We'll continue with a discussion of McCall's television allies, and how some could fit into the film's storyline. Mickey Kostmayer Kostmayer is McCall's right-hand man, responsible for running surveillance and brought the heavy weapons when needed. Kostmayer was nearly fired from The Company for his impetuousness before McCall molded him into a lethal asset. His work with McCall was always under the scrutiny of Control, who worried about using Company assets on 'small jobs.' But as we'll see, Control and McCall battled over just about everything. Adding Mickey to the mix would be like McCall calling

The Equalizer Movie: What We Know (Part 1)

We prepare for the imminent arrival of the movie by looking back at several aspects of the influential television series. As audiences prepare to see Director Antoine Fuqua's vision for the 1980's iconic television series The Equalizer , all this week we'll be taking a look back at the characters, episodes, and other unique aspects of the show that re-defined the spy genre for the Cold War generation. We'll start with a discussion of the original television plot, comparing it to what we know of the movie adaptation. Television Plot Robert McCall is a British former spy who worked for a CIA-type agency called The Company. He was one of their most experienced and decorated agents, until an op went bad and he resigned. Now living in New York City, McCall helps people in need via a newspaper ad: " Odds against you? No one to turn to? Call the Equalizer." But his old life is never too far away, as he battles the KGB, his old boss Control, an

The Equalizer Movie - What We Know (Part 3)

Our Equalizer introduction continues with a look at Robert McCall's 'tools of the trade' as well as the soundtrack. As audiences prepare to see Director Antoine Fuqua's vision for the 1980's iconic television series The Equalizer, all this week we'll be taking a look back at the characters, episodes, and other aspects of the show that helped to define it. Just like James Bond, the 'character bible' behind Robert McCall is filled with unique bits that separated him from the casual city vigilante or cop-on-the-edge figure. We'll continue with a discussion of McCall's 'tools of the trade' as well as the show's music, and see how some of it could fit into the film's storyline. Walther PPK A necessary part of any top spy's toolbox, this stylish weapon was always at McCall's side and probably recorded more kills than anyone in television. We don't know if Actor Denzel Washington will carry one in the movie versio
