It’s time for Elizabeth Banks to conquer Earth — as Rita Repulsa , that is. The actress stars as the iconic monster-unleashing villain in the upcoming reboot of the small-screen franchise about five teens with attitude and abilities to round up alien menaces. Unlike her ’90s-era counterpart, Banks’ Rita sports lighter, sleeker headgear, including gold accents and a green rope entwined around her ponytail. “It’s definitely a modern and edgy re-imagining of the original Rita Repulsa,” Banks tells PEOPLE. “We wanted to give her a backstory that connects her to the new Rangers.” Even better: Banks gets to flex her evil-doing muscles in the role. Disney's crusade to turn its animated properties into live-action movies has largely been a successful one, and that continues with Jon Favreau's new version of The Jungle Book , which has opened to $103.5 million in the States, according to studio estimates. That's a healthy start for the film, which carried a reported $175 million production budget and cost a fair chunk on top of that to market. But with overseas openings also showing strong returns, the movie is already past $290 million worldwide. Audiences seem to be embracing the immersive CG aesthetic, which uses digital technology to conjure everything but Neel Sethi's Mowgli and one or two tiny chunks of the jungle. Jason Statham vs. a monster shark? It sounds like one of his boasts from Spy come to life, but this is no comedy posturing. He's now making a deal to star in giant killer fish tale Meg . In case you've missed the news thus far, Meg is the story of two men – deep sea diver Jonas Taylor and pal Masao Tanaka – who have to stop a group of giant megalodons that have survived to the present day from escaping the Mariana Trench and heading to California’s coastline. They aren’t, as you might expect, all that successful in containing all the creatures, and that’s when it becomes really, really unsafe to go back into the water. For the new version of the film, the location has been switched to China rather than California, a little wrinkle that has helped score the country’s Gravity Pictures to share the production cost. Steve Alten’s source novel, called MEG, hit shelves in 1997 and saw its rights snapped up by Disney that same year, which put it into turnaround when Deep Blue Sea

The Impossible's Juan Antonio Bayona has now been confirmed as directing the Jurassic World sequel . Bayona was welcomed to the project by Colin Trevorrow and producer Frank Marshall via Twitter. Trevorrow, who co-wrote and directed the latest outing for the Jurassic Park franchise which became a billion-dollar hit last year, opted not to sit in the director's chair again, preferring to make The Book Of Henry and prepare for an even bigger gig shooting Star Wars: Episode IX . But he's been involved with developing the new World, writing the script alongside regular collaborator Derek Connolly (who worked with him on the first). Bayona inherits stars Bryce Dallas Howard and Chris Pratt for a film that will, if all that has been said about it so far is to be believed, will expand the scope to see even more dino action in places beyond Isla Nublar.
