It was a close run thing this weekend between two new films tempting American cinemagoers. But when the dust settled, Sony’s Screen Gems arm claimed victory with The Perfect Guy arriving top of the charts with $26.7 million, according to studio estimates. The stalker thriller stars Sanaa Lathan, Michael Ealy and Morris Chestnut in the tale of a woman who breaks up with her boyfriend and starts dating a charming new guy, only for him to turn out as… Well, you can probably figure that out. With a relatively low $12 million budget , the film is already earning money, and is a big success for the three leads. But if you’re talking budget-to-earning power, M. Night Shyamalan’s The Visit has the edge, since it was produced by the Blumhouse team for Universal and kept to an even tighter $5 million . Variety is reporting Zoe Saldana has joined the cast of “ I Kill Giants ” as a school psychologist opposite Madison Wolfe’s misfit girl battling both real and imaginary monsters in her life. Anders Walter is directing “Giants,” based on Joe Kelly’s 2008 graphic novel, with filming set to begin in early 2016. XYZ Films is handling international sales and is meeting with distributors at the Toronto Film Festival. Producers are Chris Columbus through his 1492 Pictures/Ocean Blue Entertainment; Justin Nappi through his company, Treehouse Pictures; Kim Magnusson; Man of Action Entertainment, where Kelly is a partner; and XYZ Films. Treehouse Pictures, which acquired the movie rights in March, is also financing the film. The cast is building quickly now for the Marvel/Netflix Luke Cage series: part of the interlocking Defenders quartet that also includes Daredevil, Jessica Jones and Iron Fist. Mike Colter is Luke Cage (AKA Power Man), with Alfre Woodward, Theo Rossi and Mahershala Ali signed up for other roles.
