#LootCrate Review: August 2015

As August's Villains 2 box arrives, will fans support Loot Crate's new direction? Read on to find out! Review by Matt Cummings Loot Crate appears to be at a crossroads. Having turned in an impressive run of subscription boxes in March , April , May , and June , July proved the company isn't willing to keep sending us the same thing every month. The once staple crop of a t-shirt surrounded by lower-end stuff was recently replaced with a cool figure, a hardbound book, and a rad batarang that's quickly become the most used bottle opener in the house. Some fans (like our own SandwichJohn) are opting out, with others complaining that Loot's LevelUp program is sending shirts that don't arrive with their Crate and ultimately don't fit. August's box of VILLAINS 2 is more of the same, leaving me to wonder how long customer loyalty will last. Remember Loot's promise: a $22 subscription should yield more in value than the cost. Let's see

TV Review: Fear the Walking Dead "Pilot"

No, fear the boring show. Review by Brandon Wolfe Though it has hit its stride in the last couple of seasons, The Walking Dead was far from a strong show in the early goings. The show took its sweet time to figure itself out, a process exacerbated by a revolving door of showrunners. The show spent years lost in the wilderness, figuratively as well as literally, visibly struggling to decide just what it was that it wanted to do and who its motley collection of ciphers were supposed to be. These were things the show eventually did start to crack, but only just fairly recently. However, The Walking Dead ’s lone triumph in those early days was found in its fantastic pilot episode, which confidently set the stage for a series that didn’t seem to materialize in the episode’s immediate wake. In that 90-minute premiere, which aired Halloween Night 2010, Sheriff Rick Grimes is shot in the line of duty and goes into a coma, only to awake some time later in a broken world that bore little res

Clive Owen Joins Dane DeHaan In Valerian

Luc Besson already has Dane DeHaan and the Pokemon-loving Cara Delevingne aboard for his ambitious new sci-fi epic Valerian. With those two in place, he’s adding to the roster, with Clive Owen signing on to play a character called Commander Arün Filitt. Originally created by writer Pierre Christian and artist Jean-Claude Mezieres in 1967, the series of graphic novels charts the adventures of the titular time-travelling agent ( DeHaan ) and his female sidekick, Laureline ( Delevingne ). As for how Filitt fits into the story? That’s left for us to guess at the moment. According to Deadline, which got a gander at storyboards for the film last month, this promises to be the biggest project Besson has tackled since The Fifth Element, with visions of a futuristic world that blends that film with Star Wars and Blade Runner, populated with all manner of weird creatures and just five human characters. He’s spending $180 million to bring it to life and has been clearing space at his stu
