Led by strong word of mouth and solid reviews, the biopic about rap group NWA including a very strong $24.12m Friday on its way to the fourth largest opening for an August film. These numbers are all the more impressive when you consider it did not play either in 3D or at any IMAX - that privilege went to The Man From U.N.C.L.E. Although its 'A' rating from CinemaScore and impressive 96% audience score from Flixster should bode well for its immediate future, the film will most likely endure for another reason: the lack of strong candidates remaining for the month. Universal revised its opening figure up as the musical biopic grabbed a big slice of the audience. Turns out that Straight Outta Compton did even better at the North American box office this weekend than Universal originally estimated. While the studio predicted a weekend box office of $56.1 million on Sunday morning, on Monday it revised that number to a whopping $60.2 million. The film opened to $24.1 million on Friday, including its Thursday night screenings; it corralled $19.3 million on Saturday and took in an extra $16.8 million on Sunday. The film now stands as the fifth best August opening ever, narrowly surpassing M. Night Shyamalan’s Signs, which opened to $60.1 million in 2002. Deadline is reporting that   Warner Bros. is at it again — but this time it’s animated. The studio is planning an ani feature based on the beloved Hanna-Barbera cartoon with producers Charles Roven and Richard Suckle, who reunite after American Hustle . The studio is also planting its flag for a September 21, 2018 opening. This one will be directed by Tony Cervone, who has a long affiliation with the company with Space Jam, Cartoon Network’s The Looney Tunes Show and Scooby-Doo! Mystery Incorporated. The film, a favorite childhood Saturday morning series, had prior live-action treatments with Scooby Doo in 2002 and Scooby-Doo 2: Monsters Unleashed in 2004, courtesy of Roven and Suckle. Chris Evans has been set to star in the Tom Flynn-scripted drama, which focuses on a man who sues for custody of his gifted niece.
