#BoxOffice Report: 'Ant-Man' Wins Tiny Weekend; 'Trainwreck' Surprises

Even an original Avenger can't bring home the ants. Story by Matt Cummings Marvel Studios can breathe a sigh of relief (sort of), as their record of 11 consecutive #1 openings remains intact. But while Ant-Man won the weekend with an estimated $57.23 million, the box office celebration is sure to be short. That's because early hopes of $65m fell as Friday turned to Saturday, led by 'seen that before in Iron Man ' comments. By the time it was done, the Paul Rudd heist comedy had barely beaten 2008's The Incredible Hulk , which holds the lowest opening among the 12 Marvel Studios films at $55.41m. Coming in at number 2 was Minions , which took it on the chin, plunging 57% to $49.27m. And that number was boosted by a ridiculous 4,300 theater count, which means it could have slid even further had it gotten the typical 3,100 treatment. The highly-anticipated Universal/Illumination Entertainment spin-off suffered from both poor reviews and perhaps la

TV Review: True Detective "Other Lives"

Someone solve the case of this show's missing pulse. Review by Brandon Wolfe At what point will it be officially appropriate to throw our hands in the air and declare True Detective a lost cause? The show’s second season only has three episodes left and I’m still waiting for it to begin. At this point in Season 1, the show was actually starting to wind down a bit from a series of consecutive highs, but with the current season, we remain stuck in this monotonous, low murmur. Maybe lightning can’t be captured twice, but True Detective isn’t even catching a spark this time. Even deploying the time jump, the de rigueur shakeup move in TV these days (one that the show’s initial season, in particular, benefitted tremendously from), doesn’t help matters. It’s now two months after the previous episode’s climactic firefight, an adequately staged yet curiously non-riveting attempt to elicit some of the thrills of Rust trying to extricate himself and an informant from an urban warzone

TV Review: Hannibal "Digestivo"

We now conclude the Hannibal portion of Hannibal. Review by Brandon Wolfe The Hannibal section of Hannibal (by which, I constantly need to clarify, is the show’s adaptation of the storyline from the novel and film of the same name) finally comes to a close, perhaps not a moment too soon. The meat of the 1999 novel by Thomas Harris and its subsequent 2001 film adaptation by Ridley Scott, have given the show license to steer into its artsier tendencies, the story’s ghoulish Eurocentricities feeding into the small-screen version’s penchant for horrifically gorgeous art direction and floridly poetic musings, often to its detriment. The Italian job to hunt down Hannibal Lecter released the show from its procedural shackles, yet rather than feeling like a freedom, casting aside that template left the show feeling adrift and without structure. The Thomas Harris universe has always functioned best when the monster being hunted down was someone other than Hannibal Lecter, and the show didn
