BOB MARLEY: ONE LOVE Featurette

Marvel's Release Schedule Shifts for Spider-man Addition

Here's how the biggest news of 2015 will affect Marvel Studios' release schedule for the next 5 years. Story by Matt Cummings As we reported on Monday night , fans of the Marvel Cinematic Universe just got the biggest news they could have hoped for in Sony Pictures' decision to share Spider-man and his villains with Marvel Studios. The deal is perhaps the biggest news of 2015, and could stand as the biggest entertainment news of the year, even with stories like Avengers: Age of Ultron and Batman vs. Superman: Dawn of Justice in various stages of production. The questions on everyone's mind relative to Spider-man is multi-faceted: how will he fit in to the MCU? Will he appear in Captain America: Civil War ? And how does this affect Marvel Studios' release schedule as it was announced back in October 2014? While the first two questions are TBD, we do know the answer to the third question, because the other news regarding Spider-man is just as big. Not o

Marvel and Sony Strike Joint Partnership on Spider-Man Future

Marvel and Sony learn to share and share alike. By Brandon Wolfe Sony Pictures Entertainment and Marvel Studios have struck a deal to jointly collaborate on the future of the Spider-Man character and franchise. Marvel head honcho Kevin Feige will produce the next batch of films featuring the webhead with just-departed Sony studio head Amy Pascal. The tenets of the deal stipulate that Spider-Man’s next onscreen appearance will as part of a film within the Marvel Cinematic Universe , followed by starring in his own film for Sony Pictures, to be released on July 28, 2017. This deal allows Sony to retain the rights to the character while also giving Marvel both access to the character as well as influence in his usage and direction, probably the closest to an “everybody wins” solution as was possible. Matt Tolmach and Avi Arad, the producers of the recent Amazing Spider-Man films, will executive-produce. Bob Iger, Chairman and CEO of The Walt Disney Company said: “Spider-M

Saw Writers "Recalibrating" Halloween

Michael Myers is in the shop for a recalibration. By Brandon Wolfe The Hollywood Reporter is Hollywood reporting that Patrick Melton and Marcus Dunstan, writers of the final four (so far) installments in the Saw series, have been hired to write the script for what is being called a "recalibration" of the Halloween franchise. Malek Akkad, son of longtime Halloween executive producer Moustapha Akkad, will be producing along with Matt Stein. The big question here, obviously, is what in God's holy name does "recalibration" mean? One would think it's simply a sly way to say "reboot" without using that tired old chestnut, but Bloody Disgusting has confirmed that the film will be neither a remake of the original classic nor a sequel to Rob Zombie's reboot films from 2007 and 2009 (it will also not be produced in 3D, as previously rumored). Unless it's a new installment in the previous, pre-Zombie timeline, that doesn't leave mu

Patrick Stewart Clawing His Way Into Wolverine

Original Professor X not ready to retire just yet. By Brandon Wolfe While it had initially seemed as though Fox were phasing out the old X-Men cast (save for Hugh Jackman, who will be playing Wolverine until the sun engulfs the Earth) to focus solely upon the younger First Class crew, it turns out our elderly mutants aren’t being put out to pasture just yet. Speaking to Oregon Live about his latest film Match , Patrick Stewart dropped the bombshell that plans are in the works to team his version of Professor X with everyone’s favorite scruffy, claw-handed mutant for the third Wolverine film. “What I’m very excited about is that we have been talking about a Wolverine movie, which would team Hugh Jackman and myself together,” Stewart said. “Wolverine and Professor Xavier. That would be a very different sort of X-Men from the four movies that I’ve already done." Stewart, clearly on a face-melting tear, also stated that while he is not expected to appear in the upco

Paddington Sequel in the Works

We share the latest details about a potential followup. Story by Matt Cummings When the Weinstein Company decided to delay the US release of Paddington from December 2014 to January 2015, someone must have been thinking the same thing we were in our December Movie Preview : too many releases would crowd out potential dollars for Paddington. Luckily, the decision seemed to pay off, as the Paul King movie made $57m domestically and over $150m worldwide. We too at SJF loved this movie , making it one of the highest-ranking of the new year. With markets like Japan and China having yet to experience the polite bear from Darkest Peru, the movie's primary backer Studio Canal has decided there's enough interest to move ahead with a sequel. According to Variety, the company has reached out to Producer David Heyman with the intention of pursuing a follow-up. Here's a quote from Studio Canal's Chairman-CEO Oliver Courson: “We have to be selective, work with stro

TV Review: Better Call Saul "Uno"

Walter White’s lawyer makes his opening argument. Review by Brandon Wolfe If a Breaking Bad character had to be spun off, “criminal” lawyer Saul Goodman probably made the most sense (an entire show about Walter Jr. spending an hour each week at the breakfast table would dry up fast). The character was not only a regular source of engaging comic relief, but he was also the one character who had a life outside of Walter White’s corruptive quagmire, a life that the parent series never really sought to explore. Saul, of course, had a bustlingly shady practice involving any number of Albuquerque-based goons and ne’er-do-wells. Walt and Jesse might have been his most pivotal clients, but they weren’t the only ones, and seeing Saul in action (or even in a courtroom) in the service of something other than bailing out the eternally imperiled meth duo is a concept that could have legs. The last thing television needs is another show about lawyers, but Saul Goodman is hardly your average

Blue Bloods Season 5: Episode 14 Recap - The Poor Door

Story By David Clark The main plot of this episode opens with Danny Reagan (Donnie Wahlberg) and his partner Maria Baez (Marisa Ramirez) investigating the murder of a young man found in an affluent residential building. Reagan and Baez learned that the young man was dating the daughter of a very wealthy resident. This girl’s father did not like the relationship developing between his daughter and the young man. Through the investigation it became clear that the girl’s father was the one responsible for the young man’s death. The father had hired an old associate to kill the boy so that his daughter could not continue the relationship. Unfortunately for Danny Baez the father covered up the murder well and they could not prove his involvement. Baez shared what information the investigation had brought to light with the heart broken daughter. When the man’s daughter learned of her father’s actions she was stunned. Shortly after learning the news of her fathers involve

Soundtrack Review: The Penguins of Madagascar

Gavin Greenway's soundtrack is cute and cuddle and badass written all over it. Review by Matt Cummings The new year might be filled with one loser film after another (see Seventh Son, Jupiter Ascending, and The Wedding Ringer), but 2015 and late 2014 also granted us some terrific soundtracks from various films (see our review of Ilan Eshkeri's Black Sea). There's so much out there that your iPod will be full Another of these is for the 2014 Dreamworks Animation release of The Penguins of Madagascar . Part origin story, Penguins begins with our favorite flightless birds Skipper (Tom McGrath), Kowalski (Chris Miller), Rico (Conrad Vernon) and the newly-hatched Private (Christopher Knights), whom the other dub as their 'brother.' Impulsive and frankly militant, the Penguins escape their frozen Arctic confines to become the darlings of the New York Zoo, turning one of their habitation mates Dave (John Malkovich) into a brilliant but psychotic villain.
