Trek Sequel Beams Up New Writer In the bid to get the next Star Trek sequel out in time for the franchise’s 50th anniversary in 2016 after Robert Orci’s demotion from the project, Paramount has enlisted Simon Pegg, Scotty himself, to co-write a draft at warp speed so that production can proceed at full impulse power. According to a report from Deadline , Pegg will be working with Doug Jung, who created the TNT series Dark Blue and has worked with Bad Robot Productions previously on a film titled Diamond . The storyline has not yet been revealed, but Fast and Furious director Justin Lin recently took over for Orci in the big chair. Pegg is an exciting choice to liven up Star Trek , having previously co-written the Edgar Wright-directed Cornetto Trilogy ( Shaun of the Dead , Hot Fuzz and The World’s End ) with Nick Frost. Mulder Wants Back on the Case In a follow-up to the recent report that Fox intends on dusting off The X-Files in the near future, USA Today has revealed that David Duchovny, who starred on the series for seven of its nine seasons as Agent Fox Mulder, is open to reprising his role for the revival. Duchovny stated that he is "more than happy and excited to bring it back and do it again with (co-star) Gillian (Anderson) and (series creator) Chris (Carter)." The actor went on to say "I'm assuming that it will happen sooner rather than later now. We'll see what form, how many (episodes). Certainly I can't nor would I be interested in doing a full season. It will be in some kind of limited form. We're all old, we don't have the energy for a full season." Duchovny’s availability could be an obstacle. Amazon is getting into the movie-making business. Variety reported that budgets for Amazon's movies will be closer to independent film than to Hollywood blockbusters: "from $5 million to $25 million per title." The company announced Monday that its Amazon Studios division -- the same one that is behind TV shows like "Transparent" -- will "begin to produce and acquire original movies." The first movies will enter production later this year. Amazon didn't announce any specific projects. But it said the movies will be released first in theaters and only a little while later on the company's streaming video service. "Whereas it typically takes 39 to 52 weeks for theatrical movies to premiere on subscription video services, Amazon Original Movies will premiere on Prime Instant Video in the U.S. just 4 to 8 weeks after their theatrical debut," the company said in a press release.
