The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies Review: Tired Goodbye to Middle Earth

The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies is an uninspired goodbye to Middle Earth. When Lord of the Rings arrived in the dreary year of 9/11, it set the standard for big epic battle scenes, wowed us with every beautifully-shot sequence and sequel, and even inspired a generation of filmmakers to outdo it. And yet, as its architect Peter Jackson delivered two prequels, The Hobbit has done something I could never have imagined: they became bloated, predictable, and even bored. Sadly, The Battle of the Five Armies does nothing to alleviate those concerns, displaying its true colors of drab and disappointment. With the dragon Smaug (Benedict Cumberbatch) released to destroy Laketown, Bilbo Baggins (Martin Freeman) and his Dwarf allies must deal with a new problem: the dragon madness which is about to consume their leader Thorin Oakenshield (Richard Armitage). Caught between Thorin's increasingly brutal demands and the arrival of the Elvenking Thranduil (Lee Pace), Bilbo

Knight Of Cups Trailer Starring Christian Bale

It feels like we’ve been waiting a long time for Terrence Malick’s latest, but compared to the pauses he used to take between films, a couple of years between To The Wonder and now seems like the blink of an eye. The trailer for the film has now arrived for you to peruse and unpick. It’s very identifiable as a Malick piece: some stark, startling imagery, ruminations on Big Themes and actors being put through their paces. Here, our focus is Christian Bale , a man navigating through the gloss, glamour and gonzo world of Hollywood, but also experiencing its pitfalls. And the synopsis is typically obscure: Once there was a young prince whose father, the king of the East, sent him down into Egypt to find a pearl. But when the prince arrived, the people poured him a cup. Drinking it, he forgot he was the son of a king, forgot about the pearl and fell into a deep sleep. Rick’s (Bale) father used to read this story to him as a boy. The road to the East stretches out before him. Will h

TV Review: Constantine “The Saint of Last Resorts”

Read on to find out what John Constantine has gotten himself into THIS time Constantine - “The Saint of Last Resorts” Review by Brandon Wolfe All the ominous “Rising Darkness” chatter that has been strung throughout Constantine like so much tinsel is finally starting to amount to something more than simply a lot of talk. From the pilot onward, the show has incessantly mentioned this mysterious, impending event without ever seeming to get at anything with any specificity, making it feel more like a buzzword than something concrete. “The Saint of Last Resorts,” the first chapter in the show’s two-part midseason finale, finally starts to fill in some of the blanks on what the Rising Darkness is, and in turn, bolsters the mythology of Constantine . This is the first episode of the series that aims to break free of the procedural mode in which the show has operated thus far. The episode is also significant in its attempt to put both sidekicks in the game for once. In each epis

New Trailer For Jason Statham's Wild Card

A French trailer for Jason Statham 's latest Wild Card emerged online a few weeks ago, and it's followed now by a slightly more subdued affair for the rest of us. There are still plenty of glimpses of crunchy action, but the latest clip chooses to emphasise the dramatic elements in Vegas, with veteran screenwriter William Goldman's name given almost as much prominence as the Stath's. Nobody gets their nose broken with a backwards headbutt this time... Statham's third film with Simon West following The Expendables 2 and The Mechanic , Wild Card was originally called The Heat , and had Brian De Palma attached to direct at one point. Goldman's screenplay is based on his 1985 novel of that latter name (published in the UK as Edged Weapons), and was filmed once before to disappointing results. The 1986 version starring Burt Reynolds went through an incredible five directors, including Robert Altman, who only stayed for a day. Predictably, the end product was

Concept Art From Jon Favreau’s Jungle Book

The most recent news of Andy Serkis ’ take on The Jungle Book , Jungle Book: Origins , was word of the film’s release moving back a year. Jon Favreau ’s Disney version is facing no such shifts and has just released both a logo (above) and some new concept art for the film. With a script by Justin Marks, Favreau’s film will use the blend of computer-generated animals and Neel Sethi in person as Mowgli, the human orphan raised by animals in the jungle to unspool Rudyard Kipling's story. Christopher Walken is set to voice King Louie, ruler of the jungle’s monkeys and apes, while Giancarlo Esposito is Akela, leader of the wolf pack that initially cares for Mowgli. They join a cast that already includes Ben Kingsley (panther Bagheera), Lupita Nyong’o (wolf mother Rackcha), Bill Murray (bear pal Baloo) Idris Elba (lethal tiger Shere Khan) and Scarlett Johansson (charming, deadly snake Kaa), who have all added their voices to the film ready for its release on October 16 next yea
