2013 Big Movie Questions - Q3 Report

We Ask The Big Movie Questions & Seek Film Insight For The Third Half Of 2013 By: Matt Cummings With Quarter 3 in the books, we look back at some movie questions and make bold new predictions. After a terrible Quarter 1 and much improved Q2 , we move into an odd period: the Fall season starts the day after Labor Day, but continues through the first Friday in November. That's quite a haul in terms of studying box office numbers, but if we look at things from a quarterly perspective, things get a little clearer. As part of our ongoing series, we look back at several big movie questions we posed in January, and postulate on the Holiday/Oscar season that starts next month. In addition, we've re-posted links to our Quarter 1 and Q2 Report, in case you want to berate us. Enjoy. Did audiences stand in line to see Arnold and Stallone?  No - although we loved Escape Plan for its 80's action and twisty plot, audiences have largely stayed away. Weekend box o

Carrie Review. The Well-Meaning Carrie Reboot Reminds Us Why Some Films Should Never Be Remade

Carrie Review By: MattInRC The well-meaning reboot Carrie benefits from all the modern technical tools, but still can't match the original. Why is it that Hollywood can't learn its lesson of remaking classic films? You would have thought they had learned something from the well-intentioned but soulless Sabrina , or Mark Wahlberg's Planet of the Apes . Yet, every few years a project comes along that reminds us that Hollywood has a very short memory and perhaps needs a kick in the face to remind them. This time, it's the Steven King classic Carrie, which is filled with excellent performances and good-looking special effects, but begs the obvious question of need. Carrie is less a story about bloody murderous violence and a compelling drama between the titular telekinetic ( Chloe Grace-Moretz ) and her impossibly religious fanatical mother Margaret ( Julianne Moore ). The Bible-thumping mother has forced Carrie into a tiny box of a life, resembling t

Could Tim Burton Return To Direct Beetlejuice 2?

Tim Burton is mulling a return to the world of his 1988 classic Beetlejuice . Sources say that Burton has the offer from Warner Bros. to direct the movie, on which he is already a producer with David Geffen. But insiders say that Burton has yet to read the latest draft of the script, which is by Seth Grahame-Smith and David Katzenberg. (Grahame-Smith penned the scripts for Burton’s Dark Shadows and the Burton produced Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter , based on his own novel.) Michael Keaton is expected to reprise is role for the sequel. And it’s by no means his next movie. That would be Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Childre n, which is set up at Fox. Doctor Who’s 50th Anniversary Trailer

It’s not surprising to see the BBC keeping the hoopla heavy for Doctor Who’s 50th anniversary celebration, given how successful it has been around the world, as well as at home. The channel used new drama Atlantis as the launchpad for a trailer focusing on the character’s history and teasing what’s to come with the November 23 episode. Take a look and see what classic/Nu-Who elements you can spot. The special – which will be broadcast simultaneously in several countries to try to stamp out downloading – finds Matt Smith’s Eleventh incarnation coming face to face with David Tennant’s beloved Tenth. Also on deck is the mysterious Doctor played by John Hurt, who we met at the end of The Name Of The Doctor. There’s plenty to enjoy in the trailer, even if it doesn’t show any footage from the special episode itself (a refreshing change and a policy we’d be happy to see continue until transmission, because, as River Song might say, “spoilers!”) And to mark the episode, there's also

Homefront Red-Band Trailer Starring Statham & Franco

Here is the red-Band trailer for Homefront . Be warned that Jason Statham and James Franco go about their mutually vengeful business in a way that's probably not safe for work (without headphones). Much more than last time in the way of people being shot to bits and resoundingly beaten there, plus some particularly ripe dialogue and one of those flashbacks where The Stath has hair. Always enjoy those. It's looking to be another retro-throwback '80s style R-rated actioner, of which there have been a few this year. This one has the benefit of having been written by Mr Sly Stallone himself. If you watch carefully you'll even see a bullet to the head. Statham is the guy-with-a-troubled-past-now-trying-to-live-a-quiet-life Phil Broker, while Franco is meth kingpin Gator, who turns vans upside down like they in a crazy washing machine (or something). Winona Ryder, Kate Bosworth, Rachelle Lefevre and Clancy Brown are also all in there somewhere, and Stallone's scr
