BIG STAR: NOTHING CAN HURT ME Acquired By Magnolia Pictures

The Wagner/Cuban Company’s Magnolia Pictures announced today that they have acquired North American rights to BIG STAR: NOTHING CAN HURT ME , the definitive documentary about the beloved and influential 70s rock band Big Star. Directed by Drew DeNicola and Oliva Mori, the film was produced by Mori and Danielle McCarthy, executive-produced by John Fry, founder of Ardent Studios, with Gill Holland and David Armillei, and co-produced by Brian Sprouse. Nonetheless, they produced a body of work of seminal importance to pop and alternative music, influencing major artists like REM, the Replacements, Elliot Smith, the Flaming Lips and countless others. For die-hard fans and newcomers alike, BIG STAR: NOTHING CAN HURT ME is a treasure, featu

War Is Brewing Over Upcoming "Godzilla" Film

A battle is brewing between Godzilla producer-financier Legendary Pictures and the two producers who brought the project to the company. Gozilla , the famed Japanese monster property, is getting a new movie treatment from Legendary and Warner Bros. (the studio has a 25 percent stake) with Gareth Edwards directing. The project is ramping up for a spring production start, with offers out to several top actors. ( Joseph Gordon-Levitt was on the list but has since passed). According to Legendary sources, the company and producers Dan Lin and Roy Lee are sparring over creative and financial differences. Warners insiders say Legendary wanted the producers to reduce their fees. When the pair declined, the company began exercising a pay-or-play clause in their contracts to boot them from the project, a nearly unheard-of move. The dispute first was reported by Hitfix. Lin, a producer behind this week's Gangster Squad, and Lee, brought the much-sought-after Godzilla project to

New Pacific Rim Trailer

Though it’s easy to get jaded when trailers seem to be carbon copies of each other, as if no more thought has gone into the marketing than to drag out the best bits of what has gone before, we’re actually rather pleased with this new Pacific Rim promo, which you can watch below. Not only does it let us enjoy some of the highlights of the previous trail (which you can watch for comparison below), it actually brings some new footage from Guillermo del Toro’s huge monster mash. Working from a script by Travis Beacham, the director has concocted a tale of giant creatures known as Kaiju surging from another dimension into our own via a mysterious portal. Making landfall in coastal cities around the world, they precede to lay waste to huge chunks of architecture and more than a few puny humans. But we mortal men and women prove to be made of stronger stuff, and begin constructing huge robots called Jaegers to fight the new menace. Among the brave souls hitching their nervous system

Jack Reynor Joins Transformers 4

Just when it appeared Michael Bay had all but locked in the young leads for Transformers 4 , along comes the director himself with some new information. Yes, Bumblebee is out and Hot Rod is in… No, sorry, we’re being told that’s the product of our warped imaginations. Instead, Jack Reynor will be running with the robots. Reynor , who was born in the States but raised in Ireland, is having a damn good week. His latest film, What Richard Did, is arriving in UK cinemas this week and Bay has picked him to lead off TF4 alongside Mark Wahlberg . “I just hired a great new actor for Transformers 4 to star against Mark Wahlberg. Jack Reynor, he is an Irish kid that came to America with 30 bucks in his pocket. Pretty ballsy. Seriously who does that? Anyway I spotted him in a great little Irish movie What Richard Did. This kid is the real deal.” We’re not sure Mr B has all of his facts quite straight there, but he certainly appears happy with his choice. This latest casting update see

Josh Brolin Joins Sin City: A Dame To Kill For

With the cameras cranking and the blue/green screens up, casting announcements for Robert Rodriguez and Frank Miller’s Sin City: A Dame To Kill For are coming thick and fast. Yesterday brought word that Joseph Gordon-Levitt has been cast in a new character role. Now that has been followed with the news that Josh Brolin and Christopher Meloni are aboard. Brolin , it seems, will be bringing his recent, MIB III-showcased expertise at playing characters in their younger days for the film, as he’s signed on to take over Dwight from Clive Owen . Dwight’s story in Dame is a prequel tale that sees him hunted down by Ava Lord, the only woman he ever loved. His life goes into the gutter and he ends up with a completely different face later in life (hence the actor swap). “Dwight is a constant character throughout the Sin City world and A Dame To Kill For is a defining episode in his life,” Rodriguez and Miller said in a statement picked up by Collider . “We’re looking forward to Josh’s
