Given that this past weekend hosted the annual sportsgasm known as the Super Bowl, the usual trend is for lower box office results. So the teams behind super powered found footage thriller Chronicle and horror chiller The Woman In Black should be feeling extra pleased this morning, as both films performed beyond expectations. Chronicle managed to sneak out a win, taking the top spot with $22 million, but the Daniel Radcliffe ghost story did almost as well, earning $21 million for second place. CHRONICLE Movie Review- Liam Neeson and his hungry pack of wolves held off other competition, so that The Grey only dropped one place to third, earning $9.5 million. That meant heart-warming family tale Big Miracle had to make do with fourth place, opening with a slightly disappointing $8.5 million. Insidious , perhaps the most profitable as well as the spookiest movie of last year, is getting a sequel. The original creative team, director James Wan and writer Leigh Whannell, is in talks to return for the new film. Jason Blum will be back as producer. The first movie starred Patrick Wilson and Rose Byrne as a couple who at first think their house is haunted but come to the realization it's one of their sons who is possessed. The first movie (spoiler alert!) ended with Wilson being possessed after a journey to a realm of the dead. The movie was released in April and scared up almost $100 million worldwide on a budget of only $1.5 million. It is unclear whether the sequel will continue the story or whether the lead actors will return. Byrne’s stock has risen since the first movie as she was part of Bridesmaids , the surprise comedy hit that has opened new doors for all its leads. Sharon Stone is back in sexual thriller territory, signing on to star in Attachment , the latest movie from director Tony Kaye. W2 Media, the Los Angeles- and Vancouver-based film distribution, financing and international sales company, is behind the film. In Attachment, written by Christopher Denham, Stone will play a married woman who has a one-night stand with a student. The indiscretion comes back to haunt her when the lover begins to date her daughter and stalk her family. Brad Epstein of Panther Films is producing the film while Adam Krentzman and W2 Media exec produce.
