BOB MARLEY: ONE LOVE Featurette

District 9 Takes over the Box Office

District 9 Takes over the Box Office The weekend B.O. provided prima facie evidence that movies tailored to a specific demo can shine in the summer frame, which has historically been dominated by all-audience event pics. Fueled by older males, Sony/TriStar's sci-fi thriller "District 9" opened to a boffo $37 million from 3,049 theaters to win the weekend crown at the domestic B.O. Movie was a sizable victory for Sony's Worldwide Acquisitions Group, Sony's marketing team, frosh filmmaker Neill Blomkamp and producer Peter Jackson. "District's" opening is one more example of a pic generating strong biz this summer without big stars. Coming in a handy No. 2 was Paramount holdover "G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra," another male-driven film. "Cobra" dropped 59% to an estimated $22.5 million from 4,007 runs for a domestic cume of $98.8 million. The distaff side of the multiplex was much the same story. Warner Bros./New Line's "The T

Does Hollywood need to go Back to School ?

Does Hollywood need to go Back to School ? This summer is on track to equal, and maybe even surpass, the B.O. record. To date, tallies are running even with last year's summer numbers at $3.6 billion. And it could eclipse the record-breaking $4.3 billion earned in summer 2008.a So in theory, studio executives have plenty to learn by studying what worked this summer -- and what didn't. But, in fact, Hollywood has tried some daring experiments with the summer formula this year and the results are inconclusive. There were whopping successes and embarrassing failures, and execs are scratching their heads to figure out why some succeeded and others didn't. There are plenty of questions to be raised from these numbers. •Does a May bow assure longer playing times? A few years ago, the studios opened three blockbuster titles in May: The third editions of "Spider-Man," "Pirates" and "Shrek," all had great bows, followed by long shelf lives. This year,

Robert Downey Jr to play Lestat? In Anne Rice's " Vampire Chronicles"

Robert Downey Jr to play Lestat? In Anne Rice's " Vampire Chronicles" It's seems like everywhere you turn someone is making a Vampire movie. So it's not too much of a Surprise to hear that another movie is being made from an Anne Rice book. Since she is the Queen of Vampire Books. I hope that it will be as good as Interview with a Vampire But that movie did have my Man Tom Cruise Playing Lestat and this movie will have Robert Downey Jr in the same role, So we will have to see. We've been scrambling all week to confirm the following report, especially since it came from a very reliable source and is insanely logical considering the popularity of vampires these days. I guess something good has come from the success of Twilight as Bloody Disgusting has learned exclusively that Universal Pictures is looking to restart Anne Rice's The Vampire Chronicles, which tells the tale of the vampire Lestat Du Lioncort (through his narration), a nobleman-turned-vampire in

Jason Patric Joins the Cast of Loser

Jason Patric Joins the Cast of Loser Jason Patric has joined the cast of "The Losers," the Warner Bros./Dark Castle adaptation of the DC-Vertigo comicbook. Patric plays Max, a CIA agent who has gone off the rails and sets up the title characters, a black ops team, to be killed. Jeffrey Dean Morgan, Chris Evans, Zoe Saldana and Idris Elba also star. It is the first true villain role and the first comicbook movie for an actor who is usually drawn to dark, edgy, adult-themed fare. Courted by Joel Silver (who produces with Akiva Goldsman), Patric was lured by the chance to work with director Sylvain White. He also decided to plug in with the young geek demo driving the box office these days. "Let's face it, the geeks have inherited the world, and if you want to be a player in this system, you have to be willing to do some of this," Patric acknowledged. "But I wouldn't do 'The Losers' if it wasn't interesting to me as an actor." Loser is ab

Wolverine 2 Gets Chris McQuarrie to Write The Screenplay

Wolverine 2 Gets Chris McQuarrie to Write The Screenplay Some good news for The Wolverine Franchise. Its great to get such a writer for the next installment of the movie. And what direction is he going to take this film? It’s early days yet, but it looks like Fox’s mutant prequel sequel, X-Men Origins: Wolverine 2 (or whatever the hell it’s going to be called), is heading in the right direction after Christopher McQuarrie was brought on board to write the screenplay. McQuarrie, probably best known as Bryan Singer’s go-to screenwriter of choice (he wrote Public Access, won an Oscar for The Usual Suspects, did an uncredited polish on the first X-Men, and most recently penned Valkyrie), is one of the best writers in Hollywood, and his hiring would seem to be a strong signal that Fox and producer/star Hugh Jackman are determined to ensure that the Wolverine sequel is an improvement on the original. That, of course, wouldn’t be hard. Although the movie grossed almost $400 million at the gl

Thank Crom. Its Great news that he will not allowed him ruin another movie Franchise, Like he has done in the past. "X Men Last Stand " Empire magazine spoke to Conan and Red Sonja producer Joe Gatta today, and he had a few revelations to share about the upcoming films. Most importantly, it appears that Brett Ratner is currently off Conan, which he was expected to direct. "We’re currently in the process of hiring a director," he told us. "For the past six months we were discussing the movie with Brett Ratner, and for more timing issues than anything else we had to part ways with Brett. We all wanted him to do it, believe me; just the timing didn’t work. But you never know what can happen." That last comment would appear to leave the door open for a return for Ratner, should his schedule free up (he's currently got abo
